AGR1257 AGRICULTURE BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

3 Credit Hours

Catalog Description:

AGR1257 - Agriculture Business Management (3 hrs.)

Introduction to managing production, marketing, risk, human resources and financial as it relates to a manager position.

Controlling Purpose:

The purpose of this course is to give the agricultural student a realistic understanding of economics, personnel, operation, and management techniques of Agriculture Businesses.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Identify and define the basic business model for agriculture.
  2. Define and utilize different management techniques.
  3. Identify, define and use terminology related to markets and business management.
  4. Demonstrate management techniques utilized to manage employees, financials, and facilities.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1: Introduction to Business Management

Outcomes: Students will be introduced to all entry level aspects of agricultural business.

  • Identify basic business model concepts.
  • Define Agriculture Business.
  • List and define management practices.
  • Demonstrate understanding of agriculture sales.
  • Identify basic nature, scope and concepts in financial management.
  • Define Agriculture Finance.

UNIT 2: Management for Production, Employment and Financial

Outcomes: Students will define and identify the different management techniques.

  • Demonstrate proper leadership skills.
  • Analyze and apply proper problem-solving skills.
  • Employ and practice proper record keeping skills.
  • Develop and use strong and proper communication skills.
  • Demonstrate proper understanding of credit, risk assessment and lender-borrower relationship.
  • Describe and explain capital structure, leverage and financial risk.
  • Analyze and apply proper problem-solving skills for risk management.
  • Employ and practice proper record keeping skills.
  • Explain the concept time value of money.
  • Preform investment analysis, involving inflation, risk, and financial planning.
  • Discuss the Equity Capital from both inside and outside of agriculture.
  • Identify and describe the management environment for financial institutions.

UNIT 3: Terminology, Markets and Commodity Exchange

Outcomes: Students will identify, define and use terminology related to markets and business management.

  • Identify various marketing techniques.
  • Identify and explain the market structure in Agriculture.
  • Explain the usage of commodity exchanges.
  • Describe and interpret contracts, integration and financing and discuss how they work in the industry.
  • Describe social media utilization.
  • Demonstrate understanding of risk management.
  • Define and use relative terminology.
  • List and define management practices, financial statement and information flow.
  • Demonstrate understanding of agriculture sales, financial analysis and control.
  • Discuss the differences in ownership and leasing of real estate and non-real estate assets and its effect.

UNIT 4:  Record Keeping Management

Outcomes: Students will demonstrate management techniques used to manage employees, financials, production and facilities.

  • Demonstrate appropriate leadership skills.
  • Recognize and identify inventory management, appraisals, and its relation to financial well-being of the operation.
  • Identify and apply different record management systems.
  • Recognize inter-facility troubleshooting and management techniques.
  • Demonstrate understanding and use of financial records and their use in the management process.
  • Identify and describe legal aspects of Ag finance.
  • Discuss the business organization in agriculture.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
