AGR1269 AGRICULTURE ORAL COMMUNICATION

3 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the freshman and sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

AGR1269 - Agriculture Communication (3 hrs.)

This class is designed to introduce students to the communication styles, terminology and types of communication used in the field of Agriculture. The Student will experience verbal and written communication used in private, public and overall industry to increase overall effectiveness when communicating in all the various aspects of the Agricultural Industry.

Controlling Purpose:

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to oral and written communication, terminology used in the different industries, and increase the student’s effectiveness when communicating.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. Identify the proper terminology used in the different sectors of the Agricultural industries.
  2. Recognize and utilize the proper communication technique needed in different situations.
  3. Demonstrate enhanced verbal and written communication.
  4. Develop interpersonal skills suitable to the context and the audience.
  5. Develop critical comprehension listening and reading skills.
  6. Demonstrate ethical speaking and listen with critical comprehension.
  7. Demonstrate ethical writing with critical comprehension.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1: Terminology and Proper Usage

Outcomes: The student will be able to Identify terms and the Industry they are used in.

  • Identify a term and what industry it is used in.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the proper usage of the terminology.
  • Explain a term’s meaning with in proper context.
  • Effectively utilize information provided to make informed decisions in proper term usage.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of terms and industry standards

UNIT 2: Public Speaking

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to successfully demonstrate enhanced verbal communication and interpersonal skills used in the industry for different situations.         

  • Analyze different public speaking styles and which one is necessary for different situations.
  • Summarize and explain the different speaking styles.
  • Demonstrate a basic ability to deliver a speech.
  • Utilize basic knowledge to make decisions on speech style and audience.
  • Demonstrate competence and poise in fielding audience questions and comments.
  • Practice appropriate conversational mode through self-presentation and response to feedback.
  • Demonstrate main ideas, reasoning and evidence
  • Recognize discrepancies between speaker’s verbal and non-verbal messages.
  • Demonstrate active listening skills.

UNIT 3: Electronic communication for WEB, Media, Video and Online

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to decide and properly use different electronic communication styles.

  • Describe and analyze different types of electronic communication.
  • Demonstrate proper term and word usage in the communication.
  • Relate the correct information in the correct intent of the communication.
  • Utilize the proper form of communication to meet the situation.
  • Demonstrate the ability to write in a proper, understandable, and correct manner.
  • Demonstrate ability for design and arrangement to meet the communication need

UNIT 4: Written Communication for Emails, Letters, and other Communication Styles

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to successfully develop written communication skills.

  • Identify when to use the different written communication styles.
  • Define the purpose of each written communication type.
  • Relate the process and need of written communication style.
  • Explain how to set up and develop the body of information.
  • Describe the component of a good written communication.

UNIT 5: Proper Oral Communication

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to identify the basic components of proper oral communication.

  • Recite on demand, the proper welcome to business.
  • Demonstrate basic phone greeting for business and personal.
  • Relate the relationship between physical and verbal demeaner to first impressions.
  • Demonstrate proper oral communication to co-workers and supervisor.
  • Utilize proper techniques for online and video communication.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
