Music is an essential part of our social and cultural fabric. Music Appreciation is designed to broaden the understanding of the various aspects of music and its relationship to history and the world around us. No musical background is necessary.

Music is an essential part of our social and cultural fabric. Music appreciation is designed to broaden the understanding of the various aspects of music and its relationship to history and the world around us.
Learner Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, the student will:
- Identify and describe the elements of melody, harmony, pitch, rhythm, timbre, texture, form, and dynamics.
- Identify the expressive qualities of the elements of music through listening experiences.
- Describe the general characteristics of musical genres and the relationship to their cultural/historical settings.
- Demonstrate knowledge of music artists, composers, and compositions related to the context of the course.
- Critically evaluate the role of music in their lives.

UNIT 1: Music Fundamentals
Outcomes: Identify and describe the elements of melody, harmony, pitch, rhythm, timbre/tone color, texture, form, and dynamics.
- Recognize various musical textures
- Identify various rhythms
- Define musical terms
- Differentiate musical timbres/tone colors
UNIT 2: Historical Perspective
Outcomes: Students will describe the general characteristics of music genres and their relationship to cultural/historical settings.
- List major composers and their compositions
- Recall style period dates
- Breakdown major compositional forms within each period
- Chart the evolution of various musical ensembles
- Associate various style periods with their cultural/historical backdrop
UNIT 3: Active Listening
Outcomes: Students will identify the expressive qualities of the elements of music.
- Aurally Identify various musical instrument families
- Describe various musical forms and structures
- Classify thematic motives and materials
- Accurately use concrete musical vocabulary to describe various pieces of music
UNIT 4: Personal Perspective
Outcomes: Students will evaluate the role of music in their lives as well as their evolving level of musical citizenship.
- Comment on a live musical performance
- Collaborate on a group research project
- Measure the level of personal musical exposure
- Develop a personal musical citizenship narrative

Course Time Frame:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission, and the Kansas Board of Regents define a credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The college shall assign the number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
