THE2742 STAGECRAFT

3 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the Freshman or Sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

THE2742 Stagecraft (3 hrs.)

This course is an introduction to the design, construction, and handling of theatrical scenery, lighting, and sound. Class work will involve lecture, projects, practical laboratory technical work in college productions, and examinations.

Controlling Purpose:

Good stagecraft skills are essential to anyone working in the theatre. This course will emphasize the fundamentals of safety, design, construction, basic electricity, and the use of new technology.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Apply stagecraft terminology used in technical theatrical production.
  • Employ safe practices and techniques specific to theatrical environments.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of stage systems and machinery, support areas, and construction tools.
  • Demonstrate basic competencies in professional technical methods and procedures used to realize a theatrical production.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1: Safety

Outcomes: Student will be able to operate equipment in the theatre/scene shop with maximum safety for themselves and others.

  • Operate power tools
  • Hang scenery and operate fly lines
  • Operate and maintain lighting equipment
  • De-energize an electrical circuit

UNIT 2: Construction

Outcomes: Student will learn how to construct scenery from working drawings.

  • Identify necessary tools and use them correctly
  • Construct scenery that is aesthetically pleasing and appropriately sturdy
  • Texture and paint scenery for a desired effect

UNIT 3: Electricity

Outcomes: Student will troubleshoot electrical circuits and use equipment displaying their understanding of theatrical electrical systems.

  • Identify “hot” lines, polarity, and proper grounding procedures
  • Troubleshoot a malfunctioning electrical circuit
  • Display understanding of the power formula, power loads, and wire gauges

UNIT 4: Technology

Outcomes: Student will complete several tasks displaying application of skills and an understanding of equipment operation.

  • Display competence on the auditorium A/V systems and programs
  • Program and execute cues and sub-master controls on the lighting console in the auditorium

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
