This course is designed to improve individual communication skills. By understanding the elements of effective communication, students will be able to create environments that will bring out the best in themselves and others. In addition, students will learn how to better turn ideas and feelings into words, how to listen more effectively, respond more appropriately to what others have said, and most important of all, how to maintain and develop good interpersonal relationships with their family, their peers and fellow workers. Emphasis is placed on interviewing skills and both verbal and non-verbal communication. IPC will fulfill the 3-hour Communications requirement at Cowley College but will not at some four-year universities in the state. Students should check with their transfer university to verify that this course will fulfill the communication requirement for their program.

Controlling Purpose:
This course is designed to improve both the appropriateness and the effectiveness of the student’s interpersonal communication.
Learner Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, students will understand the major concepts from communication theory, be able to recognize these concepts in their own experience, and be able to build on their own personal communication styles.

The learning outcomes and competencies detailed in this course procedure meet, or exceed the learning outcomes and competencies specified by the Kansas Core Outcomes Project for this course, as sanctioned by the Kansas Board of Regents.
Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

Unit 1: Foundations of Interpersonal Communication
Outcomes: Students will define interpersonal communication, its purpose, and the importance of developing personal competency.
- Explain the interpersonal communication process.
- State the characteristics of competent communication.
- Identify how communicating through technology affects interpersonal communication.
- Describe self-concept and its influences as well as how it affects interpersonal communication.
Unit 2: Creating and Responding to Messages
Outcomes: Students will identify interpersonal communication techniques that contribute to effective communication in a variety of contexts.
- Recognize the role of perception of self and others in interpersonal communication.
- Practice competence in utilizing empathetic responses.
- Evaluate the role of verbal and non-verbal messages in interpersonal communication.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of gender and culture on interpersonal communication.
- Apply effective listening habits and skills.
- Prepare and conduct a live, interactive interview with a pertinent professional.
Unit 3: Dimensions of Interpersonal Relatioinships
Outcomes: Students will learn to manage the dynamics of intrapersonal and interpersonal communication.
- Describe various personal and social influences on emotional expression.
- Discover appropriate ways of establishing, maintaining, and ending relationships.
- Identify different types of friendships and the role communciation plays in maintaining them.
- Disinguish and apply various effective conflict communication skills.
- Describe ways to create supportive communication climates.

Course Time Frame:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
