CHC5732 CHILDCARE PRACTICUM I

3 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either Freshman or Sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

CHC5732 - Childcare Practicum I (3 Credit Hours)

Students will gain hands-on experience in actually working with children. This class will provide 150 clock hours in the care of young children.

Prerequisites:

Six (6) credit hours of Early Childhood courses.

At the start of the course, each student will be required to have a background check completed.

Controlling Purpose:

This course is designed to help the student recognize and apply the Kansas Statutes for Licensing while being involved in the early childhood profession.  This course will provide hands-on experience in early childhood settings.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to use concepts of observation and evaluation.  Demonstrate knowledge of the Kansas Statutes and Regulations for Licensing Preschool and childcare centers.  Create Lesson Plans based on developmentally appropriate curriculum for toddler and preschool children. 

Unit Outcomes and Criterion Based Evaluation Key for Core Content:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period.  Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1: OBSERVATION AND ASSESSMENT

Outcomes: Upon Completion of this unit, students will be able to successfully learn the basic principles of curriculum design and apply them to an observation setting.

  • Design curriculum in order to demonstrate knowledge in specific content areas, or in all the required content areas of Child Development Credentials.
  • Rehearse and develop classroom practices to manage time, communications, and record keeping procedures to support and enhance student learning
  • Provide the mentoring teacher with a “Cooperative Teacher Lesson Evaluation” form to be complete during the implementation of each lesson plan (available in student resources online).
  • Prepare observational guidelines pertaining to age of children in which field work is being done.
  • Utilize observation as teaching tools.
  • Use knowledge gained from observations to plan and implement age-appropriate curriculum.

UNIT 2: KANSAS STATUTES & REGULATIONS

Outcomes: Upon Completion of this unit, students will be able to successfully research and organize the Kansas State Early Learning Standards and implement them into the curriculum.

  • Maintain a class room that follows all of the Kansas Statutes and regulations.
  • Identify location of specified statute or regulation.
  • Use knowledge of the Kansas Statutes in field work classroom.

UNIT 3: EARLY CHILDHOOD CURRICULUM

Outcomes: Upon Completion of this unit, students will be able to successfully design and implement lessons to create units and plans.

  • Prepare lesson plans for Infant/Toddler/Preschool age children.
  • The practicum student will create and implement 2 lesson plans for six of the 8 developmental   content areas found in the Kansas Early Learning Standards (a total of 12 lesson plans). (www.ksde.org) Use the required lesson plan template found under student resource online.
  • Explain the relationship between developmentally appropriate practices and successful teaching.
  • Explain how to use positive discipline strategies.
  • Implement age-appropriate lesson plans.
  • Collaborate with other educational professionals to accomplish school and state educational goals and objectives.
  • The practicum student will submit each lesson plan, the mentoring teacher evaluation form and the self-reflection form where indicated in the online assignment drop box.
  • The practicum student will complete the “Practicum Student Self-Reflection” form after each lesson plan has been implemented (available in student resources online).

Projects Required:

Students will complete 150 contact hours working with children in a state licensed Childcare facility, complete a packet of course work provided by the instructor, and schedule two observations from the instructor at the facility in which their field work is completed.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission, and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching, and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
