CHC5734 CHILDCARE PRACTICUM II

Catalog Description:
CHC5734 - Childcare Practicum II (3 hrs)
Student will complete 150 contract hours working with children in a state licensed Childcare Facility, complete a packet of course work, provided by the instructor, and schedule two observations from the instructor at the facility in which their field work is completed.

Prerequisites:
Completion of Practicum 1 and six (6) credit hours of Early Childhood courses, or two years of experience in a licensed facility. At the start of the course, each student will be required to have a background check completed.
Controlling Purpose:
This course is designed to help the student increase their knowledge in creating a developmentally appropriate environment and curriculum for young children. The field work required will provide first hand experience implementing course work in a state licensed setting.
In this course, students apply their expertise of curriculum design, instructional strategies, classroom management, and assessment into a Child Care setting. Mixing field observation experiences and teaching, students utilize standards-based educational theories and practices daily in real-life teaching and learning environments.

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to demonstrate a knowledge of developmentally appropriate curriculum and environment for young children.

UNIT 1: KANSAS STATUTES AND REGULATIONS FOR LICENSING PRESCHOOL AND CHILDCARE CENTERS
Outcomes: Upon Completion of this unit, students will be able to successfully design and develop classroom procedures to enhance classroom engagement and licensing.
- Read and highlight the licensing regulations for the State of Kansas.
- Identify the location of the specified statute or regulation.
- Use the knowledge of the Kansas Statutes in field work classroom.
- Develop lesson plans that address student needs
- Design curriculum in order to demonstrate knowledge in specific content areas, or in all the required content areas of Child Development Credentials.
- Rehearse and develop classroom practices to manage time, communications, and record keeping procedures to support and enhance student learning
- Use strategies, planning practices, assessment techniques, and appropriate accommodations to ensure student learning in a standards-based curriculum and communicate those plans to parents, guardians, professionals, administrators, and the community.
- Collaborate with school-based teams and parents to identify, address and promote student achievement.
UNIT 2: KANSAS STATUTES & REGULATIONS
Outcomes: Upon Completion of this unit, students will be able to successfully research and organize the Kansas State Early Learning Standards and implement them into the curriculum.
- Use observation to enhance teaching methods.
- Observe for developmental delays.
- Chart behaviors throughout the day to determine causes of misbehavior.
- Utilize formal and informal assessments to measure and monitor student performance,
- Describe the importance of observation as a teaching and learning tool.
- Exhibit professional and ethical practice that is responsive to evolving issues and environments.
UNIT 3: EARLY CHILDHOOD CURRICULUM
Outcomes: Upon Completion of this unit, students will be able to successfully design and implement lessons to create units and plans.
- Use the environmental rating scale when setting up a DAP classroom.
- Consider DAP practices when designing lesson plans.
- Make changes to create a developmentally appropriate environment.
- Identify developmentally appropriate environments for young children.
- Utilize effective classroom management and student engagement strategies.
- Integrate literacy into content area instruction.
- Collaborate with other educational professionals to accomplish school and state educational goals and objectives.
Projects Required:
Student will complete 150 contact hours working with children in a state licensed Childcare Facility, complete a packet of course work provided by the instructor, and schedule two observations from the instructor at the facility in which their field work is completed.

Course Time Frame:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission, and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching, and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
