WEL3637 WELDING FABRICATION (3 hrs.)
Students will be introduced to the basics of fabrication practices used in industry. This course is designed to expose students to fabrication techniques and tools used.

Controlling Purpose:
This course is designed to help the student increase their knowledge regarding fundamentals of industrial related techniques, tools used, terminology, materials preparation, mathematics and practices in welding fabrication.
Learner Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, the student will:
- Gain knowledge of terminology and its meaning as related to fabrication procedures and practices used in the welding industry.
- Be able to apply basic understanding of different materials used in the welding industry.
- Solve basic problems, apply basic technical knowledge, exhibit teamwork, perform basic mathematics, and apply critical thinking in solving fabrication issues.
- Apply safety principles in a work environment to minimize hazards and prevent losses to productivity.
- Demonstrate basic proficiency in reading and understanding technical documents and blueprints.
- Define different welding processes and how it relates to fabrication.
Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

UNIT 1: Material Preparation and Equipment Setup
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to (list unit outcomes using action identifiers in bulleted format.
- Demonstrate the basic knowledge for processes in cutting material in accordance to specifications and tolerances set for desired results.
- List and explain different types of cutting procedures and when each should be used.
- Define and use related terminology as it applies to the fabrication process.
- List and explain steps used in product preparation.
- Describe basics of the effects and need for preparing materials.
- Students will be able to explain basic metal makeup and properties.
UNIT 2: LAYOUT
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to
- Have a basic understanding of layout and pre-assembly processes.
- Explain layout procedure for different fabrication situations.
- Demonstrate a basic knowledge of tools, equipment and welding processes to be used.
- Define terms and process to be used.
- Identify and explain where parts and equipment should be placed to allow for better efficiency of the fabrication process.
UNIT 3: FABRICATION
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to
- Explain and perform basic fabrication processes.
- Exhibit basic safety protocols.
- Determine industry standards to meet desired results.
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of fabrication procedures in accordance with WPS’s and blueprints.
- Recognize different tools used in the fabrication process.
- Determine and explain welding processes used for fabrication.
- Demonstrate a knowledge of welding parameters and ranges for welding specific joint, material thickness, and weld size set by tolerances.
- List and describe techniques used in performing successful fabrication on both structural and piping weldments.

Course Time Frame:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
