CST 3274 WORKPLACE SKILLS

2 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the freshman or sophomore year and to area high school vocational students.

Catalog Description:

CST 3274 - WORKPLACE SKILLS (2 hrs.)

This course focuses on instilling strong workplace ethics within the context of carpentry and construction trades. Students will explore ethical considerations, professional conduct, and communication strategies essential for success in the construction industry.

Controlling Purpose:

This course is intended to prepare employees with the knowledge, skills, and ethical mindset necessary for success in the carpentry and construction trades, fostering a culture of professionalism and integrity in carpentry and construction. 

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Develop an understanding of workplace ethics specific to the construction trades.
  2. Be able to apply ethical principles to real-world scenarios commonly encountered in workplace settings.
  3. Enhance communication skills for effective collaboration and conflict resolution.
  4. Gain awareness of industry-specific ethical challenges and solutions.
  5. Understand professionalism and accountability

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1: introduction to workplace ethics and skills

Outcomes: Students will be introduced to what workplace ethics are and why they are important in the professional field. 

 Upon completion of the unit, the student will:

  • Describe workplace ethics in construction trades.
  • Discuss the importance of ethical behavior in professional settings
  • Explore common ethical dilemmas in construction.

UNIT 2: Professional conduct and communication

Outcomes: Students will learn how to, and demonstrate how to conduct themselves professionally, as well as how to communicate professionally in the work place. 

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

  • Employ professional communication skills.
  • Discuss scenarios focusing on effective communication in construction settings.
  • Explain the impact of communication and professional conduct in the work place.

UNIT 3:  Team collaboration and conflict resolution

Outcomes: Students will learn about collaborating as a team to efficiently work together, as well as, how to effectively resolve conflicts

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

  • Explain strategies for effective teamwork in construction projects.
  • Demonstrate conflict resolution scenarios.
  • Explain how to resolve conflicts in the workplace.
  • Explain effective conflict resolution strategies.

UNIT 4: professionalism and accountability

Outcomes: Students will learn about the importance of professionalism in the workplace as well as integrity and accountability.

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

  • Describe professionalism and its importance in carpentry and construction trades.
  • Explain accountability and its importance in meeting ethical standards.
  • Explain how to promote professionalism in construction trades.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
