CST 3275 CARPENTRY AND CONSTRUCTION SKILLS APPLICATIONS I
3 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the freshman or sophomore year and to area high school vocational students who are accepted into the Carpentry/Construction Technology program.

Catalog Description:

CST 3275 - CARPENTRY AND CONSTRUCTION SKILLS APPLICATIONS I (3 hrs.)

This course focuses on developing fundamental construction skills through hands-on applications based on the NCCER General Carpentry curriculum. Students will engage in practical activities to enhance their proficiency in key construction areas. This course ensures that students not only grasp theoretical knowledge but also apply practical construction skills in a supervised, hands-on learning environment, preparing them for success in the construction industry.

Prerequisites:

CST 3266 Carpentry II with a C or higher

Controlling Purpose:

This course focuses on honing basic carpentry and construction skills through project-based learning.  Students will actively engage in hands-on projects to apply theoretical knowledge gained in earlier courses, enhancing their proficiency in carpentry and construction trades.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Acquire practical skills in construction fundamentals.
  2. Apply theoretical knowledge to real-world construction scenarios.
  3. Develop proficiency in various construction techniques.
  4. Demonstrate understanding and adherence to safety protocols.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1: Construction skills application

Outcomes: Develop skills using appropriate materials and equipment.

Upon completion of the unit, the student will be able to:

  • Recall an overview of essential construction skills.
  • Apply basic tools and equipment.
  • Observe and perform proper use of construction tools.
  • Discuss safety protocols in construction.

UNIT 2: tools and equipment proficiency

Outcomes: Students will be honing skills on the use and application of different construction tools.

Upon completion of the unit, the student will be able to:

  • Explain the use of construction tools and equipment.
  • Perform maintenance and practice proper care of tools.
  • Perform supervised practical exercises with various tools.

UNIT 3: building materials and construction drawings

Outcomes: Students will identify and use different construction materials based on information from construction drawings. 

Upon completion of the unit, the student will be able to:

  • Analyze different building materials and their uses.
  • Examine construction drawings.
  • Employ materials and drawings into projects.
  • Identify various building materials

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
