HVS 6519 ESPORTS IV

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the Freshman or Sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

HVS 6519 - ESPORTS IV (1 HR.)

Student participation in esports on an intercollegiate level.

Course Classification:

Physical Activity

Prerequisites:

Student must be an active member of the Cowley College Esports Team.

Controlling Purpose:

This course is designed for student-athletes participating in the Cowley College Esports Team. Students will engage in structured team practices, strategic game review sessions, physical wellness, and intercollegiate competitions. Emphasis is placed on teamwork, communication, cognitive development, time management, and professional conduct in competitive gaming environments.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to and have participated in esports competitions.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1: PRACTICE AND PERFORMANCE PREPARATION

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to successfully engage in and reflect on key aspects of competitive esports performance, teamwork, and personal development.

  • Demonstrate effective communication and teamwork in a competitive gaming environment
  • Participate in structured esports practice, including skill drills and team-based strategies
  • Analyze and critique gameplay (VODs) to identify areas for improvement
  • Demonstrate physical and mental preparation techniques to support in-game performance
  • Display sportsmanship, discipline, and time management throughout training sessions

UNIT 2: COMPETITION AND STRATEGIC EXECUTION

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to successfully apply advanced skills and strategic thinking to represent their team in high-level competitive esports play.

  • Compete in intercollegiate matches and tournaments representing Cowley College
  • Implement coordinated team strategies during live gameplay
  • Carry out the program’s competitive philosophy to the best of their ability
  • Demonstrate technical skills and in-game decision making required for high-level competition

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
