Catalog Description:
HPE6310 - ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PE & HEALTH (3 hrs.)
This course addresses major concepts of health education, human movement, and physical education (PE) activities to enable elementary teachers to promote healthy lifestyles for all students in their classroom. The course provides theory, modeling, and application of instructional strategies to support healthy living and physical development of elementary students.

Controlling Purpose:
The purpose of this course is to address major concepts of health education, human movement, and physical activities to enable elementary teachers to promote healthy lifestyles for all students in their classroom.
Core Outcomes:
The learning outcomes and competencies detailed in this course meet, or exceed the learning outcomes and competencies specified by the Kansas Core Outcomes Project for this course, as sanctioned by the Kansas Board of Regents.
Learner Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, the student will:
- Explain the benefits of incorporating movement and physical activity into the elementary classroom environment.
- Describe how health concepts influence students’ daily living activities, academic performance, and overall wellbeing.
- Demonstrate how to integrate developmentally appropriate health content into the elementary classroom.
- Demonstrate how to integrate developmentally appropriate physical activity content into the elementary classroom.
- Plan and implement a variety of developmentally appropriate “brain breaks” to help engage or re-focus the classroom.
- Recognize the elementary teachers’ role in supporting concepts of health and physical education standards in the development of the elementary student.

UNIT 1: Contextual Considerations of the Learner
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to identify the learner and teacher role in integrating health and physical education in the classroom.
- Define health in the 21st Century and understand the history of health in the United States.
- Apply knowledge of childhood development to physical development and health in children.
- Explain the responsibility of classroom teachers to model and teach healthy behaviors to children in the classroom.
- Explain the connection between physical health and factors that may affect learning.
UNIT 2: A Coordinated Approach to Healthier Students
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to apply concepts and curriculum of health and physical education to influence students’ daily living activities, academic performance, and overall wellbeing.
- Describe healthy versus unhealthy habits in children.
- Explain policies and/or laws designed to improve student health.
- Apply the WSCC Model (Whole School, Whole Community and Whole Child Model).
- Explain bullying prevention lessons and curriculum in the classroom and school.
UNIT 3: Health Education in the Classroom
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to integrate health education content and strategies in the classroom.
- Identify challenges in health education and teaching controversial topics.
- Plan effective teaching methods and strategies for teaching health education in the classroom.
- Locate and utilize state and national standards for developing a health-related teaching lesson plan.
- Plan classroom practices that promote a healthy classroom and overall student health.
UNIT 4: Physical Education in the Classroom
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to integrate physical education content and strategies in classroom.
- Locate and utilize state and national standards for integrating physical education into the classroom.
- Link and integrate physical education standards with academic standards in a lesson plan.
- Develop an integrated activity plan for the elementary classroom based on standards.
- Examine different classroom resources and management plans to promote an active classroom.
- Development an assessment of student learning in health and physical education.
- Locate and evaluate a variety of brain breaks and other activities to encourage movement within the classroom.

Course Time Frame:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
