This course is open to students on the college level who are Criminal Justice majors and have completed all of the requisite student patrol courses: Criminal Justice Topics I CRJ5482, Criminal Justice Topics II CRJ5483, Criminal Justice Internship CRJ 5484 and Law Enforcement Operations and Procedures CRJ5445.
Catalog Description:
CRJ5424 - Student Patrol Practicum I (2 hrs.)
This course is designed to be a continuation of the student patrol program with the continuation of weekly patrol requirements, extra duty requirements and one hour per week with the program director scheduled at the convenience of both the student and the program director. The extra duty requirements will focus on street level supervision in criminal justice. Supervision based projects and critical thinking dilemmas will be given to students throughout the semester.

Prerequisites:
The student taking Student Patrol Practicum must have successfully completed the following classes with a final score of C or higher in each course: Criminal Justice Topics I CRJ5482, Criminal Justice Topics II CRJ5483, Criminal Justice Internship CRJ 5484 and Law Enforcement Operations and Procedures CRJ5445 OR be a Criminal Justice major in good standing under an articulation in which these courses have already been awarded.
Controlling Purpose:
This course is designed to help the student increase their knowledge concerning supervision in patrol operations as well as enhancing teamwork skills and abilities in the criminal justice field.

UNIT 1: PATROL DUTIES
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to demonstrate safe and efficient patrol.
- Complete weekly patrol shift
- Supervise and plan extra duty events outside of routine patrol
- Patrol in a safe and effective manner
- Maintain appropriate uniform appearance
- Describe the limitations of the role of student patrol officer
- Maintain situational awareness
- Describe normal vs abnormal campus activity
UNIT 2: LEADERSHIP AND DECISION MAKING
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to apply improved critical thinking skills.
- Make sound decisions in a timely fashion

- Utilize techniques for getting subordinates to willingly follow instructions

UNIT 3: COMMUNICATION AND COMMAND PRESENCE

- Demonstrate or illustrate the ability to correct or improve the performance of subordinates

UNIT 5: ETHICS, LIABILITY, AND POLICY ENFORCEMENT
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to demonstrate risk and liability awareness.
- Identify issue of liability for an organization
- Complete an annual review of the Cowley Student Patrol Policy Manual
- Demonstrate professionalism
- Identify ethical dilemmas in campus settings
- Choose actions consistent with ethical standards
- Identify actions that increase liability
- Apply policy to patrol situations
UNIT 6: COACHING AND MENTORING
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to understand and explain the importance of ethical leadership.

- Develop one or more professional career mentors
- Reinforce program standards through actions and decisions
- Deliver constructive feedback respectfully
- Demonstrate behaviors expected from those being coached
- Establish peer related mentoring boundaries
Projects Required:
The student will be required to:
- Complete one shift per week with student patrol.
- Complete a minimum of six hours of extra events outside of patrol.
- Complete three ride-alongs with a supervisory level officer, Sergeant or higher with a local agency.
- Complete a weekly check in with program director or other supervisory level personnel.
- Conduct performance evaluations on student patrol students.
- Be the first line of the student complaint process for student patrol.
- Complete appropriate supervisor-based scenarios as given by the instructor.
- Assign additional tasks to student patrol based on community need and see that they are carried out.
- Complete all course work given by instructor.

The student will be required to provide pants and footwear in accordance with the uniform policies for student patrol.

Course Time Frame:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission, and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching, and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
