ENG2260 - CREATIVE WRITING

This course is open to students on the college level in either the Freshman or Sophomore year and to area high school vocational students.
Catalog Description:
ENG 2260 - Creative Writing (3 hrs.)
A course designed to encourage creative expressive writing. Emphasis is on generating ideas, modeling professional creative works, and choosing genres of writing to best convey creative expression suitable for publication. Ample attention will be given to responsive revision of submissions. Students will be exposed to varied genres and professional works, write creatively expressive works, and critique each other’s work.

Prerequisites:
Completion of ENG2211 Composition I with a grade of C or above or instructor approval.
Controlling Purpose:
This course is designed to allow students to produce original compositions in various genres: poetry, short stories, non-fiction features, children’s literature, dramas, and character sketches. Some students may even investigate potential publication of their best work in literary venues. Writing is a means of self-expression and a means of communicating emotions, ideas, history, and perception of the world and the human condition. Therefore, by studying literature by professional writers, the student becomes aware of how writing may become more effective.
Learner Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course students will be able to generate expressive, creative works, then assess and revise their works.
Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:
The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other material as time allows.
Unit 1: Focusing and Generating Ideas
Outcomes: Student will be able to initiate a writing task.
- Generate ideas through a variety of prewriting techniques and exercises.
- Pattern compositions after professional models of writing.
- Collect expressive ideas, responses and reflections in a journal.
Unit 2: Drafting Creative Works
Outcomes: Student will be able to assess ideas and write a complete draft.
- Select prewriting ideas most likely to convey creative expression effectively.
- Focus on a style consistent with a specific genre of writing.
- Organize writings/ideas consistent with model works.
- Develop complete drafts(s).
Unit 3: Revising
Outcomes: Student will strengthen creative works through revision.
- Critique student’s own draft as well as drafts of other students to determine if the intended objective of a composition has been achieved.
- Assess effectiveness of draft and validity of instructor feedback.
- Appraise similar professional writings.
- Reconstruct compositions in response to comments and comparisons.
- Closely analyze text to eliminate extraneous words and sentences, redundancies, and unnecessary sections.
Unit 4: Editing
Outcomes: Student will produce a finished work consistent with standards of correctness.
- Assemble grammatically correct structure.
- Maintain consistency in person, subject, voice, tense, and mood.
- Produce text free of incorrect spelling.
Projects Required:
Completion of a minimum of four major creative works from varied genre as assigned by instructor. Compilation of portfolio.

Course Time Frame:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
