Catalog Description:

ENG 2261 - Fiction Writing (3 hrs.)

This course is designed to improve the writing skills of students through use of various methods of brainstorming and fiction writing. Critical analysis of writings will be used to aid in developing students’ thinking, support of thesis/message, and style. They will learn various techniques in creating, drafting, and revising works of fiction.

Course Classification:



A grade of C or higher in ENG2260 Creative Writing or instructor approval.

Controlling Purpose:

This course is designed to allow the student to experiment with different types of fiction writing, primarily short stories.  Writing is a means of self-expression and a means of communicating emotions, ideas, history, and perception of the world and the human condition. Through writing and the reading of short fiction, the student becomes aware of how to express ideas and truths in a fictional mode.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to brainstorm ideas, organize the ideas, and compose fictional works. Various techniques involved in brainstorming of ideas will be learned so that the student knows the methods that work best for him/her.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period.  Instructors may add other material as time allows.

Unit 1:  Focusing and Generating Ideas

Outcomes:  Student will be able to initiate a writing task.

  • Generate ideas through a variety of prewriting techniques and exercises.
  • Study and analyze professional works of fiction.
  • Pattern stories after professional models of writing.
  • Collect expressive ideas, responses and reflections in a journal.

Unit 2:  Drafting Creative Works

Outcomes:  Student will be able to assess ideas and write a complete fictional story.

  • Select prewriting ideas most likely to convey creative expression effectively.
  • Focus on a style consistent with fiction writing.
  • Develop complete drafts.

Unit 3:  Revising

Outcomes:  Student will strengthen creative works through revision.

  • Critique student’s own draft as well as drafts of other students to determine if the intended objective of a story has been achieved.
  • Assess effectiveness of draft and validity of instructor feedback.
  • Reconstruct stories in response to comments and comparisons.
  • Closely analyze text to eliminate extraneous words and sentences, redundancies, and unnecessary sections.

Unit 4:  Editing

Outcomes: Student will produce a finished work consistent with standards of correctness.

  • Assemble grammatically correct structure.
  • Produce text free of incorrect spelling.
  • Maintain consistency in person, subject, voice, tense, and mood.

Unit 5:  Presentation of Ideas

Outcomes:  Student will understand techniques for oral presentation.

  • Understand variety of presentation techniques.
  • Decide on presentation techniques for an original work.
  • Critique oral presentations of fiction.

Projects Required:

Completion of a minimum of four major creative works as assigned by instructor.  Compilation of portfolio.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
