INR3750 INDUSTRY PRACTICUM I

1 Credit Hour

Student Level:

This course is open to Machine Maintenance and Mechatronics students only and is utilized for practical application of competencies for maintenance personnel.

Catalog Description:

INR3750 - Industry Practicum (1 hr.)

This course is designed to help the student increase their practical knowledge while pursuing a career in Machine Maintenance. The primary purpose in each practicum is increasing knowledge and practical applications required of maintenance personnel. Students taking this course will receive hands-on experience under the direct supervision of an employee in the Industry. This includes working on the live plant floor with functioning and malfunctioning machines.

MEC 3400 Introduction to Mechatronics or Instructor approval.

Controlling Purpose:

This course is designed to help the student increase their practical knowledge while pursuing a career in Machine Maintenance. Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to successfully demonstrate practical applications in machine maintenance.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1: Machine Maintenance and Industry Application

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the student will be able to successfully demonstrate and/or describe appropriate treatment of machinery on a live production floor.

  • Apply training and awareness to company specific safety and training programs.
  • Demonstrate correct use of company procedures for Lock Out Tag Out, Confined Space entry, and Working at Heights.
  • Understanding workplace issues including stress, sexual harassment and substance abuse.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the processes used in manufacturing.
  • Communicate productions, materials requirements, product specification.
  • Maintain regular quality audits, good manufacturing practices, and compliance with company requirements including DFA, OSHA, Department of Agriculture, and Department of Health.
  • Monitor indicators to ensure correct operations.

UNIT 2: Maintenance Team Assignment

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the student will be able to successfully contribute to the overall successfulness of their assigned shift.

  • Demonstrate a customer service focus.
  • Understanding their role in business’ profitability and company goals.
  • Coordinate flow and work production goals with team.
  • Utilize team problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal skills such as listening, informing, being approachable and actively working inside of a team.
  • Demonstrates leadership capabilities within work groups.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
