ART2127 FOUNDATION DRAWING II

3 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the Freshman or Sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

ART2127 - Foundation Drawing II (3 hrs.)

A continuing exploration in the basic principles, materials, and skills of freehand drawing. This course synthesizes studies in observation, proportion, sighting perspective, value, color, and composition. The course is required for art majors.

Prerequisites:

ART2126 Foundation Drawing I

Controlling Purpose:

The further development of the basic knowledge and understanding of drawing materials as well as developing skills with color and liquid media.

Learner Outcomes:

The student will demonstrate an understanding of the formal elements of drawing and an eye-hand coordination as developed through observation and competence in the require media.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other content as time allows.

UNIT 1:  A Study of Line

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to successfully use the differing expressive qualities of line with fluid media.

  • Develop a further understanding of the expressive possibilities of line.
  • Use pen and ink to demonstrate the differing qualities of line.
  • Use colored pencil to demonstrate the differing qualities of line.
  • Use ink brush to demonstrate the differing qualities of line. 
  • Use colored marker to demonstrate the differing qualities of line.

UNIT 2:  Study of Form

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to further understand the use of space, shape, negative shape and space, and volume in drawing.

  • Develop a further understanding of the use of shape in drawing.
  • Develop a further understanding of the use of space in drawing.
  • Develop a further understanding of the use of negative space in drawing.
  • Develop a further understanding of how to imply mass and volume in drawing through contour and cross-contour.

UNIT 3:  Study of Value

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to successfully demonstrate a further understanding of value through fluid media and toned grounds.

  • Develop a further understanding of composing with light and dark.
  • Use pen and ink, colored marker, ink brush and colored pencil.
  • Draw from still life, portrait and onsite.

UNIT 4:  Study of Composition

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to demonstrate a further understanding of composition and how design elements may be used.

  • Demonstrate a further understanding of rhythm in composition.
  • Demonstrate a further understanding of repetition in composition.
  • Demonstrate a further understanding of motion in composition.
  • Demonstrate a further understanding of balance in composition.
  • Demonstrate a further understanding of unity in composition.
  • Demonstrate a further understanding of variation in composition.
  • Demonstrate a further understanding of economy in composition.

UNIT 5:  Perspective

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of perspective and how to manipulate it for an expressive result.

  • Demonstrate a further understanding one-point perspective.
  • Demonstrate a further understanding two-point perspective.
  • Demonstrate a further understanding of the expressive power of the eye line.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
