This course is open to students on the college level in either the Freshman or Sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

ART 2150 - Elementary Art Methods (3 hrs.)

This course is for those who plan to go into elementary education. It is a studio course with a hands-on approach designed so that anyone desiring to be a teacher (K-8) can design, implement, and evaluate arts experiences that are developmentally appropriate, meaningful and challenging for all students, that lead to positive learning outcomes and that develop positive attitudes toward artistic explorations and expressions. This course is designed for education majors but is open to all students who wish to learn more about working with art and young children.

Course Classification:



Student must have completed or concurrently enrolled in EDU6211 Introduction to Teaching.

Controlling Purpose:

This course is designed to help the student increase their knowledge concerning methods to be used in teaching elementary and middle school art students.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to understand art, its meaning and significance in our world.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

UNIT 1: Introduction

Outcomes:  Upon completion of this unit, the students will understand the visual language of art and be familiar with its use in various societal and cultural contexts.

  • Understand art as a universal visual language.
  • Become familiar with categories of visual and cultural arts.
  • Be able to understand perceptual experiences and creative thinking.

UNIT 2:  Structure of Art

Outcomes:  Upon completion of this unit, the students will understand and apply the formal elements of art.

  • Use art elements.
  • Describe design principle.
  • Evaluate resolving art production problems.

UNIT 3:  Elementary Fundamentals

Outcomes:  Upon completion of this unit, the students will understand the needs of the elementary student and apply their knowledge to planning and evaluating art lessons in an interdisciplinary approach.

  • Understand the needs of their students.
  • Planning art instruction.
  • Guidelines for assessment.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
