CGA2012 INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER ILLUSTRATION

3 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the freshman or the sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

CGA2012 - Introduction to Computer Illustration (3 hrs.)

This course is designed to extend participants’ knowledge of drawing and painting techniques. Students will learn digital skills of integration with computer painting and drawing. (Adobe Illustrator required).

Controlling Purpose:

This course is designed as an introduction in the use of Adobe Illustrator. Through hands-on experience with the program/computer, the student will learn principles of drawing and painting using current tools of technology.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other content as time allows.

UNIT 1 - Introduction to Adobe Illustrator

Outcomes: Upon completion of the unit, the students will be able to

  • Open Illustrator and create a new document.
  • Create document parameters for a new document.
  • Set preferences to personalize use of Illustrator software.
  • Utilize various tools, such as the pen tool, brush tool, shape tools, and text tools.
  • Utilize direction points and anchor points.
  • Use the fill and stroke operations.
  • Design type so that it wraps around graphic objects.
  • Utilize the Average and Join commands.
  • Illustrate the effective use of layered documents.
  • Create and manipulate compound paths.
  • Understand the use and masks and how to create them.
  • Design, create, and import appropriate graphics elements.
  • Export a file to other applications.
  • Utilize templates and the tracing tool.
  • Create, apply, and transform patterns in a design.
  • Utilize the transformational tools: scale, rotate, reflect, shear, and blend.
  • Create type that follows a path.
  • Design type with various color and shading elements.
  • Align type in a document to a ruler guide.
  • Link type areas.
  • Design type so that it wraps around graphic objects.
  • Print an Illustrator file: composites and color separations.

Projects Required:

Simulations from text as assigned.

Textbook:

Contact Bookstore for current textbook.

Materials/Equipment Required:

Adobe Illustrator CS5 and a USB storage device

Course Timeframe:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission, and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching, and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
