MUS2652 AURAL SKILLS III

2 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in the sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

MUS2652 - Aural Skills III (2 hrs.)

A course designed to develop aural skills through melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation and singing melodic material at sight. This course is required of music majors and taken concurrently with MUS 2650 Music Theory III.

Prerequisites:

MUS2625 Aural Skills I and MUS2626 Aural Skills II.

Controlling Purpose:

Aural Skills is offered as a means of further developing aural skills through melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation and singing melodic materials at sight.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will further his skills of listening intelligently to melodies illustrating basic concepts and provide an accurate analysis of them.  The student will also further his skill to sing unfamiliar melodies at sight and develop “aural imagery” to hear it in his mind.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period.  Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1:  Melodic Relationship in Music

Outcomes:  Student will develop listening skills to identify melodic relationships in music.

  • Notate two-phrase melodies.
  • Identify aurally these melodic figures: sequence, repeated melody, repeated rhythm.
  • Identify aurally all diatonic intervals.
  • Notate two-part melodies.
  • Identify aurally the harmonic intervals of the m3, tritone, P5, m6, M6 and m7.

UNIT 2:  Harmonic Relationship in Music

Outcomes:  Student will develop listening skills to identify harmonic relationships in music.

  • Identify aurally these major and minor triads: I, ii, iii, IV, V and VI.
  • Identify aurally the six-four chord and its function.
  • Identify aurally the harmonic rhythm and harmonic analysis of short melodies.
  • Identify aurally nonharmonic tones in Bach chorales.
  • Identify aurally the I, ii, IV, V, vi and vii triads in chorale phrases.

UNIT 3:  Rhythmic Relationships in Music

Outcomes:  Student will develop listening skills to identify rhythmic relationships in music.

  • Notate quarter-beat values.
  • Notate beat units divided into triplets.
  • Notate quarter-beat values in compound meters.

UNIT 4:  Sightsinging of Melodies

Outcomes:  Student will develop sightsinging skills using numbers to sightsing major and minor melodies.

  • Sightsing melodies that consist of intervals studied earlier plus m7, M7, A4, and d5.
  • Sightsing melodies with chromatic alteration and modulations.
  • Sightsing ensemble excerpts in two and three voices.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
