THE2745 THEATRE PRACTICUM III

1 Credit Hour

 

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the Freshman or Sophomore year.

 

Catalog Description:

THE 2745 - Theatre Practicum III (1 hr.)

[KRSN THT1040]

This course earns one hour of college credit for students who participate in, act or do support work for a major college theatrical production.

 

Course Classification:

Internship

 

Prerequisites:

None

 

Controlling Purpose:

This course provides practical, independent and hands-on training in theatre productions and projects. Students will work individually, and in teams, on such production areas as performance, set construction, publicity, sound/lights, and costume/make-up.

 

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, the student will have learned to:

  1. recognize leadership tasks;
  2. work within the committee structure;
  3. independently complete assigned responsibilities;
  4. look internally for creative means to complete assigned tasks;
  5. complete responsibilities in a timely manner;
  6. commit to a project and to its completion through lab attendance;
  7. recognize closure through successful production and instructor evaluation.

 

Units Outcomes and Criterion Based Evaluation Key for Core Content:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other material as time allows.

 

UNIT 1: PERFORMANCE

Outcomes: Students will demonstrate the ability to contribute their particular skill to an ensemble performance.

  • Memorize material as assigned and in a timely manner.
  • Attend rehearsals prepared and on time.
  • Attend all scheduled performances.

 

UNIT 2:  SET CONSTRUCTION

Outcomes: Students will demonstrate the ability to contribute their particular skill to complete an entire stage set.

  • Build stage flats based on approved design.
  • Construct set pieces.
  • Paint and texture finished set flats and set pieces.
  • Erect flats and pieces into a solid unit.

 

UNIT 3: PUBLICITY

Outcomes:  Student will demonstrate the ability to design a publicity campaign.

  • Generate creative ideas in a team setting.
  • Delegate campaign responsibilities among committee members: posters tickets, radio, programs, etc.
  • Implement best ideas to promote production.

 

UNIT 4:  SOUND AND LIGHT

Outcomes: Student will demonstrate the ability to do basic functions using sound and/or light equipment.

  • Work in conjunction with technical director to design and set up production lighting.
  • Work in conjunction with technical director to design and set up production sound.
  • Operate sound board and lighting equipment for performance as assigned by directors

 

UNIT 5:  COSTUMES AND MAKE-UP

Outcomes: Student will demonstrate the ability to design costumes and make-up for a production.

  • Design, build, or find appropriate costumes.
  • Design and help apply stage make-up for performance.

 

Projects Required:

Students’ documented log sheets are turned in weekly. Points are earned through committed attendance, quality completion of assigned tasks, and required lab hours.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
