Catalog Description:
EDU6281 - Children With Special Needs (3 hrs)
This is an introductory course designed for individuals interested in children ages birth through 18. It will provide students with information concerning children with special needs, more specifically those who experience difficult life situations as well as those with physical or cognitive disabilities. It will provide many opportunities for differentiating instruction to meet the needs of these students.

Controlling Purpose:
This course is designed to help student increase their knowledge concerning children with special needs, who have physical and cognitive disabilities and the information on laws that provide for these children and their families.
Learner Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to identify the various types of disabilities, learn how to meet their needs and be aware of the laws governing their rights.

UNIT 1: The Exceptional Child
Outcomes: Upon Completion of this unit, students will be able to successfully:
- Identify the origins of special education.
- Understand individual differences.
- Recognize the role of the family in special needs children.
- Be aware of the historical development of special education.
UNIT 2: Exceptional Children and Their Environment
Outcomes: Upon Completion of this unit, students will be able to successfully:
- Know the State and Federal legislation.
- Designate role of the courts.
- Comprehend the screening process for special needs children.
UNIT 3: Identifying and Assessing Young Children with Special Needs
Outcomes: Upon Completion of this unit, students will be able to successfully:
- Comprehend the meaning of definitions involved in special education.
- Know the process of early invention.
- Identify the least restrictive environments.
- Understand the inclusion process.
- Determine the assessments used to identify suspected disabilities.
UNIT 4: Curriculum for Children with Special Needs
Outcomes: Upon Completion of this unit, students will be able to successfully:
- Be aware of the approaches to curriculum development for special needs children.
- Define the recommended practices for curriculum in the special education areas.
- Utilize the developmentally appropriate practices for children under any conditions.
UNIT 5: Learning Environment for Special Needs Children
Outcomes: Upon Completion of this unit, students will be able to successfully:
- Know how to design the learning environment.
- Utilize the methods based on environmental arrangement.
- Select appropriate materials for the combined special needs regular classroom.
UNIT 6: Strategies for Teaching Children with Special Needs
Outcomes: Upon Completion of this unit, students will be able to successfully:
- Be able to explain adapting the home and school and setting.
- Know strategies for creating less restrictive environments.
- Identify the best teaching strategies for children with any delay or impairment.
UNIT 7: Contemporary Issues and Challenges in Special Education
Outcomes: Upon Completion of this unit, students will be able to successfully:
- Be aware of the cultures of specials needs children.
- Recognize the emerging populations of children with special needs.
- Understand how educators are prepared for teaching students in the inclusive classroom.

Course Time Frame:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission, and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching, and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
