FOL2330 SPANISH 1

5 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the Freshman or Sophomore year and to area high school vocational students.

Catalog Description:

FOL 2330 - Spanish 1 (5 hrs.)

This course provides the essentials of Spanish grammar, elementary syntax, and composition. Easy reading, drill in pronunciation, and practice in speaking will be included.

Controlling Purpose:

This course is designed to help the student increase their knowledge concerning the Spanish vocabulary, grammar and cultural information needed to communicate in Spanish in everyday situations.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to create with Spanish within a variety of basic contexts, asking and answering questions and maintaining a simple conversation.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other content as time allows.

Unit 1

Outcomes: Students will be introduced to the affective.

  • The student will learn the difference between formal and informal verb forms.
  • The student will acquire a general knowledge of the geographical locations of Spanish-speaking countries.
  • The student will acquire a general knowledge of specific Spanish-speaking countries’ customs.

Unit 2:

Outcomes:  Students will learn the basics of verb use in Spanish.

  • Accurately conjugate regular -ar, -ir, -er verbs in simple present tense.
  • Accurately conjugate common stem-changing verbs in present tense.
  • Accurately conjugate commonly used irregular verbs in present tense.
  • Accurately conjugate verbs studied in present progressive tense.
  • Accurately use the ir ta construction to discuss future events.
  • Accurately conjugate reflexive verbs in present tense.

Unit 3:

Outcomes:  Students will learn the basics of pronoun use in Spanish.

  • Identify and use subject pronouns.
  • Identify and use reflexive pronouns.
  • Identify and use possessive pronouns.
  • Identify and use demonstrative pronouns.
  • Identify and use direct object pronouns.

Unit 4:

Outcomes:  Students will learn the basics of adjective use in Spanish.

  • Use gender and number to determine correct article use.
  • Use gender and number to determine the correct forms of descriptive and quantitative adjectives.
  • Use gender and number to determine the correct forms of demonstrative adjectives
  • Correctly place descriptive adjectives in a sentence.

Unit 5:

Outcomes:  Students will learn the basics of adverb use in Spanish.

  • Correctly place an adverb in a sentence.
  • Identify endings commonly associated with adverbs.

Unit 6:

Outcomes:  Students will learn the basics of preposition use in Spanish.

  • Use correct prepositions in phrasal verb constructions.
  • Use prepositions of time.
  • Use prepositions of direction.

Unit 7:

Outcomes:  Students will develop basic speaking and listening skills in Spanish.

  • Accurately produce Spanish vowel and consonant sounds.
  • Speak in basic sentences using accurate intonation.
  • Accurately answer questions after listening to basic Spanish dialogue.
  • Converse with the instructor for two minutes using prompts related to content covered in a unit of study.

Unit 8:

Outcomes:  Students will develop basic reading and writing proficiency in Spanish.

  • Accurately answer questions in writing after reading an article written in basic Spanish.
  • Produce statements and questions using accurate, basic-level Spanish syntax.
  • Produce a paragraph in simple present tense.

Unit 9:

Outcomes:  Students will develop basic vocabulary in Spanish.

  • Use vocabulary words included in a unit of study to understand written Spanish, produce sentences, and begin or continue dialogue.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
