FOL 2332 - Spanish 3 (5 hrs.)

This course is designed to help students achieve beginning intermediate language proficiency in Spanish. Students will build on previously acquired skills to gain additional communicative competency in Spanish. Vocabulary, grammatical elements, syntax, and composition skills will be expanded. Special emphasis will be given to developing cultural awareness and using Spanish in expanded contexts.

Prerequisites:
FOL2331, Spanish II, with a C or better; OR three years of successful high school Spanish with a minimum grade of “C” in final year; OR instructor permission.

Controlling Purpose:
This course is designed for students who have completed the basic Spanish course sequence and are beginning intermediate language study. This course prepares students for intermediate level language study to meet degree requirements and for authentic communication in expanded contexts.
Learner Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, the student will demonstrate the following skills in Spanish:
- consistently use basic grammatical structures accurately
- demonstrate basic comprehension of short authentic language texts
- participate in extended discussions of topics connected to target vocabulary
- write multi-paragraph compositions on topics connected to target vocabulary and grammatical elements
- maintain limited conversations using target vocabulary and grammatical structures by accurately asking and answering questions
- demonstrate cultural competency

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

Unit 1: Language Control
Outcomes: Students will demonstrate beginning intermediate Spanish proficiency in basic grammatical structures.
- exercise appropriate control of verbs in the present, past and future tenses.
- exercise appropriate control of adjectives, pronouns, and basic Spanish syntax.
- begin to distinguish between subjunctive and indicative in communication and demonstrate increased accuracy in these forms.
Unit 2 : Reading
Outcome: Students will demonstrate beginning intermediate Spanish reading competency.
- provide detailed information after reading short, authentic texts.
- answer questions related to texts in short sentences.
- provide basic information about literary elements after reading poems or short stories.
- accurately answer “who”, “what”, “when”, “why”, “how” questions for factual texts.
Unit 3: Communication, Listening
Outcome: Students will demonstrate beginning intermediate Spanish listening competency.
- participate in extended conversations using target vocabulary and grammatical structures.
- understand basic spoken language in all tenses.
- identify the topic and purpose of discussion in listening exercises.
Unit 4: Communication, Writing
Outcome: Students will demonstrate beginning intermediate Spanish writing competency.
- complete multi-paragraph compositions using target vocabulary and grammatical forms.
- construct context appropriate questions and statements.
- edit compositions for appropriate grammatical constructions including present tense, spelling, subject/verb agreement, pro-noun use and adjective/noun agreement and, as targeted, additional verb tenses.
- take limited notes in the target language.
- transcribe basic dictations accurately.
Unit 5 : Communication, Speaking
Outcome: Students will demonstrate beginning intermediate Spanish speaking competency.
- construct and respond to questions.
- engage in task-oriented conversations for common situations.
- use past tense to narrate past events.
Unit 6 : Cultural Awareness
Outcome: Students will demonstrate increased cultural competency.
- discuss cultural references in texts.
- notice differences between formal and informal registers in spoken and written language.
- use informal and formal “you” with increased accuracy.
- begin to recognize and use idiomatic expressions.

Course Time Frame:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
