This course is a survey of American literature from the Civil War era to the present, with an emphasis placed on critical examination and the relation of themes within specific genres and literary periods to American social and historical context in which they were written.

Controlling Purpose:
This course is intended to familiarize students with developments in American literature from the Civil War era to the present. Its specific intent is to provide students an understanding of various genres, styles, periods, and artists and an appreciation of literary experience as it relates to real life. Also, the course is designed to aid students in discovering the significant role of diversity in American literary history in its broadest forms.
Learner Outcomes:
The student in this course will develop a complex understanding of the genres, themes, central figures, and key works of the expanding body of American literature from the Civil War era to the present.

Unit 1: The Emergence of Modern American Literature
Outcomes: Student will understand the changes in American Literature after the Civil War including the emergence of realism, regionalism, and naturalism.
- Explain the influence of cultural and historical trends upon American literature.
- Articulate the distinctive periods and movements of American literature.
- Evaluate and critically examine narratives of American literary history with attention to the role of diversity in its broadest forms.
Unit 2: Between the Wars
Outcomes: Student will understand the evolution of American Literature through World Wars I and II including the rise of modernism and social and political writing.
- Explain the influence of cultural and historical trends upon American literature.
- Articulate the distinctive periods and movements of American literature.
- Evaluate and critically examine narratives of American literary history with attention to the role of diversity in its broadest forms.
Unit 3: After the Second World War 1945-Present
Outcomes: Student will understand that the American literary canon is dynamic and continues to evolve; focus on southern writers, social criticism, and experimentation.
- Explain the influence of cultural and historical trends upon American literature.
- Articulate the distinctive periods and movements of American literature.
- Evaluate and critically examine narratives of American literary history with attention to the role of diversity in its broadest forms.
- Practice foundational research strategies appropriate to the discipline and write focused, convincing analytical essays in clear, grammatical prose.

Course Time Frame:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
