MCM2480 TRAVEL FOR EXPERIENCE

2 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in mass communications.

Catalog Description:

MCM2480 - Travel for Experience (2 hrs.)

Traveling to other countries or within the United States will give students the opportunity to explore the world around them, and to learn about other cultures and ideas and expand their understanding of the job of the media in the larger markets and international setting. Prerequisite: Instructor approval.

Controlling Purpose:

This course is designed to help the student increase their knowledge concerning culture, information exchange, media, politics, economics, and self.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will be familiar with cross-cultural sensitivity and become familiar with the process of cross-cultural adaptation. The student will gain a comprehension of world issues and examine their role as a global citizen.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period.  Instructors may add other material as time allows.

Unit 1:  Personal Management

Outcomes:  Students will raise funds, keep appropriate grades, and be prepared for national and international travel.

  • Account for time and location on a regular and timely basis.
  • Submit written work based on material covered and experiences in a clear, concise, logical manner with few grammatical errors.
  • Participate in discussions expressing clear, concise, logical views.
  • Understand and follow instructions to complete assignments on due dates.

Unit 2:  Orientation

Outcomes:  Students will learn about the area (culture) and media prior to and during travel.

  • Know the necessary steps for planning for a trip.
  • Produce documentation for passport and health certification.
  • Obtain needed information about destinations for diet, health, climate and necessary gear and travel needs.
  • Plan trip agendas and time tables and discuss goals and expectations of the trip.
  • Internalize rules and regulations of other locations.

Unit 3:  Transportation

Outcomes:  Students will assist with the travel plans when called for.

  • Plan and execute successful travel arrangement.
  • Manage personal belongings and luggage in unfamiliar environments.
  • Protect, convert and utilize identification papers and money in another area.
  • Execute successful navigation in unfamiliar locations.

Unit 4:  The Experience

Outcomes:  Students should be prepared for the environment and ready to document the location.

  • Practice photography (a prior class in this would be helpful).
  • Navigate unknown areas using local transportation.
  • Plan excursions to local events and attractions.
  • Immersion into another culture in food and environment.
  • Seek information on art, economics, politics and culture.
  • Relax and absorb other ways of life.
  • Compare cultures and the experiences of their own home.
  • Discuss other media systems.

Unit 5:  Reflection Paper

Outcomes:  Students will write a paper based on personal and group experiences.

  • Write a paper or produce a video on the trip.
  • Discuss the impact of the trip.

Projects Required:

Write an essay on the impact of a particular speaker from the panel or sessions. Put together a PowerPoint presentation presented in two different settings. Either write an article about the experience or put together a short video (3-5 minutes)

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
