ART2110 ACTIVE ARTIST WORKSHOP

This course is required of incoming freshmen art and design major students and open to sophomore art and design majors.
Catalog Description:
ART2110 - Active Artist Workshop (2 hrs.)
This course is a required course for all students majoring in art and design. It is an opportunity for students to explore artistic voice and better understand the way they see the world. This will be an investigation of past work, cultural, and familial influences. Through field trips, journaling, individual, and group projects, students will actively develop and manipulate their creative voice.

Controlling Purpose:
Open to art and design majors, this workshop is an opportunity for students to explore artistic voice and better understand the way they see the world. Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:
The following defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other content as time allows.
UNIT 1: Personal Artistic Story
Outcomes: For the student to develop a keen awareness of his/her personal artistic story, to understand the way he/she looks at the world and to actively develop and manipulate that awareness.
- Student will articulate his/her artistic story by looking at his/her past work and cultural/familial influences.
- Student will photograph a series of images that dramatically illustrate how he/she views the world.
- Student will, with a team, render a new piece using all available media including printmaking, alternative photographic methods, drawing media, painting media, computer media, and three dimensional construction.
UNIT 2: Community of Artists
Outcomes: To build the community of student artists through common shared experiences and to enhance their part in the greater art community.
- Student will place current work in the Denton Art Center’s Expressions Exhibit.
- Student will place work in a regional gallery.
- Student will participate in museum and gallery trips.
- Student will collaborate in a public art piece.
- Student will meet in three follow-up sessions during the year. Each session will focus on one of the three goals and incorporate journaling, group discussions, and artwork.
UNIT 3: Materials and Methods
Outcomes: To develop a working knowledge of materials and methodologies in a variety of art media.
- Student will individually and collaboratively use digital cameras and computer software to articulate his/her view of the world.
- Student will individually and collaboratively use printmaking media to develop and understanding of the creative process.
- Student will individually and collaboratively use a variety of two and three dimensional materials to expand on an awareness of his/her artistic story.
- Student will visit art supply stores, using grant money, to purchase art supplies for use in collaborative projects.
Projects Required:
Personal artistic visual statement; Photographic series of world view; Team rendering of visuals statements; Preparation of art work for exhibition; Follow-up: Journaling of the development of artistic vision.

Disposable cameras, etching press, computer lab
Variety of drawing, painting, 3D, computer, printmaking, photographic media

Course Time Frame:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
