ART2111 ART APPRECIATION

3 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the Freshman or Sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

ART2111 -Art Appreciation (3 hrs.)

This course is designed to develop a personal appreciation of art. By combining a study of concepts and artist’s works, the student should improve one’s judgment and ability to understand art critically. No art background is necessary.

Controlling Purpose:

This course is designed to provide the student with an appreciation of the visual arts; the student should become more aware of the richness of the world’s art.  This course will survey the media, techniques, and processes used to create works of art.  Students will learn to critically evaluate art using the formal elements and principles of design, subject matter, symbols, and concepts in relation to its historical and cultural context.  By the end of the course, the student should have knowledge of human communication through the visual arts and should have developed a personal criteria for viewing and assessing works of art and be able to make connections between the visual arts and other disciplines.

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Understand the media, techniques, and processes used to visually communicate ideas and create works of art.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the formal elements and principles of design.
  3. Evaluate a range of subject matter, symbols and concepts in relation to history and cultures.
  4. Apply developed and personal criteria for viewing and assessing art.
  5. Make connections between the visual arts and other disciplines.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other content as time allows.

UNIT 1:  Personal Management Skills

Outcomes: The students will attend class regularly, follow directions, and submit all assignments in a professional manner.

  • Attend class on a regular and timely basis.
  • Submit written work based on material covered in class in a clear, concise, logical manner with few grammatical errors.
  • Participate orally in class in a clear, concise, logical, respectful manner.
  • Submit completed assignments on or before due dates.
  • Understand and follow instructions.

UNIT 2:  Introduction

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will demonstrate an understanding of the purposes of art in various cultures and the role of aesthetics as it applies to the creative process.

  • Discuss the purposes of art.
  • Relate the functions of art.
  • Compare perception and awareness.
  • Define aesthetics.
  • List the traits of creative individuals.

UNIT 3:  The Language of Visual Experience

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to evaluate works of art using the formal elements of art and their application in various styles in different historical and cultural contexts.

  • Discuss form and content.
  • Define iconography and give examples.
  • List and apply the visual elements of design.
  • Explain and apply the principles of design.
  • Compare and contrast various approaches to style, including representational, abstract, and nonrepresentational.
  • Discuss and utilize formal elements, subject matter, symbols and concepts in relation to historical and cultural context to critically evaluate art.

UNIT 4:  The Media of Art

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will demonstrate an understanding of the materials and techniques used in a variety of media to create works of art.

  • Discuss the purposes, media, techniques and processes of drawing. Demonstrate various media and process.
  • Compare and contrast the techniques and processes used in various painting media.  Demonstrate one media and process.
  • Compare and contrast the techniques and processes used in various painting media.  Demonstrate one media and process.
  • Recognize and understand the various techniques and processes used in printmaking.  Demonstrate one technique and process.
  • Explain photography, film and digital art as visual arts.
  • Discuss the impact of graphic design and illustration.
  • Discuss the techniques and processes used in various sculptural media. Demonstrate one technique and process.
  • Identify the various craft media, techniques and processes.

UNIT 5:  Art as Cultural Heritage

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will demonstrate an understanding of how art and culture are interrelated and be able to identify major historical and cultural artistic styles and the major artists who created them.

  • Discuss how our knowledge and understanding of history and culture are influenced by the visual arts.
  • Trace the development of Western art from prehistoric to modern times and identify the major historical and cultural artistic styles.
  • Identify the major artists, their respective works, styles, and influences, from the Renaissance through modern times.
  • Discuss the influences of non-Western art.

Projects Required:

  1. Examinations:  The number of examinations will be determined by the instructor.  A comprehensive final examination must be given at the end of the course.  Each exam will be worth 100 points and the final exam will be worth 150 points.  Each exam may consist of short answer, multiple-choice, essay and identification questions.  No make-up exams will be given except for those students with extenuating circumstances.
  2. Required Work:  Students will be required to submit work deemed appropriate by the instructor.  Most project work will be applied formal design or techniques and processes specific to the various media which are done in class.  However, students should expect assignments which may need to be completed outside of scheduled class time.  Quizzes may also be given at the discretion of the instructor.  All work must be submitted on or before the due date; no late work will be accepted, and quizzes may not be made up.  Point values of assignments will vary.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
