ART2140 TEXTILE AND FIBERS

2 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in the Freshman or Sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

ART2140 - Textile and Fibers (2 hrs.)

This is a basic course in textile and fibers, which includes familiarization with tools and methods of weaving and macramé, and a study of fibers, textiles and dyeing. This course is not restricted to art majors.

Controlling Purpose:

This course is designed for those who have not, or who have had, previous experience in the field of weaving and the fiber arts.  It is an introduction to laboratory practice in the principles and elements of weaving and macramé.  The central purpose of the course is to establish a firm foundation to build upon in order for better understanding of the fiber arts in its many different forms.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to successfully demonstrate a working knowledge of the selected media and techniques.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other content as time allows.

UNIT 1:  The Origins of Fabric

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, students will demonstrate an understanding of the early history of weaving and fiber construction.

  • Early construction techniques
  • Primitive materials

UNIT 2:  Spinning and Coloring

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, students will demonstrate an understanding and application of the materials and techniques utilized in hand spinning and yarn dyeing.

  • Hand spinning
  • Yarn dyeing
  • Yarn and fabric patterning

UNIT 3:  Hand Weaving on Loom

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, students will demonstrate an understanding and application of the materials and techniques utilized in hand weaving on a loom.

  • Materials for weaving
  • Tools and equipment
  • Preparation for weaving
  • Loom and weaver controlled weaves
  • Finishing procedures

UNIT 4:  Construction Methods

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, students will demonstrate an understanding and application of the materials and techniques utilized in different types of weaving, both on and off of a loom.

  • Pile weaves
  • Simple looms
  • Non-loom techniques

Projects Required:

2 projects from each media

1 large project for final

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
