ART2171 - Art Exploration: Plein Air Painting (1 hr.)
This course is designed to present techniques and experiences in plein art painting (painting landscape on location). Employing a variety of practices, and procedures, this course will focus on different paint media and techniques used in painting out of doors. The course is intended for non-art majors and community members at large; however, art majors may benefit from the course.

Controlling Purpose:

The course is intended for non-art majors and community members at large however art majors may benefit from the course. Students will be required to provide paints, canvas, and brushes. A list of supplies will be available at the bookstore.
Learner Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to successfully demonstrate a working knowledge of the selected media and techniques.
Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

UNIT 1: Elements and Principles of Design
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to recite and utilize the principles of design.
- Utilize the formal elements of design including line, shape, space, color, value, and texture.
- Utilize the principles of design including repetition, balance, rhythm, unity, form, dominance/contrast.
UNIT 2: Exploration of the Media
Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of the history and techniques of oil painting on location.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of the tools and materials utilized in the presented media.
- Explore several possible solutions to a design problem utilizing the media.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of the history of the media as it pertains the techniques presented.
- Participate in a peer critique of the working produced.
Projects Required:
Number of projects required by each student will depend on student’s level of understanding of the media and principles of design. Each student will complete a minimum of one project

Materials/Equipment Required:
Students will be required to provide paints, canvas, and brushes. A list of supplies will be available at the bookstore.

Course Time Frame:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
