MUS2620 MUSIC THEORY I

3 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the Freshman or Sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

MUS2620 - Music Theory I (3 hrs.)

A course designed to study key signatures, scales, intervals, triads and their inversions, rhythm, and cadences. This includes two- and four-part writing, harmonization of melodies, realization of figured bass, and the use of primary and secondary chords.

Prerequisites:

Music Theory I is a requirement of all music majors and taken concurrently with MUS2625 Aural Skills I.

Controlling Purpose:

To continue the presentation of the basic ingredients of music, so that structure, design, and language are made clear to the student.  This class will deal specifically with compositional and analysis skills.

Learner Outcomes:

For those students majoring in music, this class will provide the basic material necessary for success in Music Theory II, III, and IV, and ultimately, success in completing a music degree at any four-year institution.

The learning outcomes and competencies detailed in this course outline or syllabus meet or exceed the learning outcomes and competencies specified by the Kansas Core Outcomes Groups project for this course as approved by the Kansas Board of Regents.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period.  Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1:  Fundamentals

Outcomes:  Student will recognize and comprehend the rudiments of music.

  • Write and identify examples of all major, minor and modal scales ascending and descending including key signatures on the treble and bass clef staves using appropriate notation.        
  • Identify all diatonic major, minor, diminished, and augmented intervals ascending and descending.
  • Identify elements of rhythm including; durational symbols, beat and tempo, meter, division of the beat, simple and compound time signatures.
  • Identify all major, minor, diminished, and augmented triads and seventh chords in root position, first and second inversions.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
