MUS2653 AURAL SKILLS IV

2 Credit Hours

 

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in the sophomore year.

 

Catalog Description:

MUS 2653 - Aural Skills IV (2 hrs.)

A course designed to develop aural skills through melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation and singing melodic material at sight. This course is required of music majors and taken concurrently with MUS2651 Music Theory IV.

Prerequisites:

MUS2625 Aural Skills I, MUS2626 Aural Skills II, and MUS2652 Aural Skills III.

 

Controlling Purpose:

This course is a continuation of MUS 2652, Aural Skills III, and is offered as a means of further developing aural skills through melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation and singing melodic materials at sight.

 

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will further his skills of listening intelligently to melodies illustrating basic concepts and provide an accurate analysis of them.  The student will also further his skill to sing unfamiliar melodies at sight and develop “aural imagery” to hear it in his mind.

 

Units Outcomes and Criterion Based Evaluation Key for Core Content:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period.  Instructors may add other material as time allows.

 

UNIT 1:  MELODIC RELATIONSHIPS IN MUSIC

Outcomes:  Student will develop listening skills to identify melodic relationships in music.

  • Notate sequences in melodic dictation.
  • Identify aurally all harmonic intervals
  • Continue notation of two-voice melodies.
  • Notate melodies that modulate to closely related keys.
  • Identify aurally phrase relationships and cadences in homophonic music.
  • Identify aurally binary, rounded binary and three-part form and phrase structure of complete compositions.

 

UNIT 2:  Harmonic Relationships in Music

Outcomes:  Student will develop listening skills to identify harmonic relationships in music.         

  • Identify aurally dominant 7th chords, diminished 7th chords and nondominant 7th chords.
  • Identify aurally nonharmonic tones in Bach Chorales.
  • Analyze two-phrase excerpts as to style and form.
  • Identify aurally these chords: MM, Mm, mm, dm, dd 7th chords.
  • Identify aurally harmonic and melodic relationships from Haydn Sonatas.

 

UNIT 3:  RHYTHMIC RELATIONSHIPS IN MUSIC

Outcomes:  Student will develop listening skills to identify rhythmic relationships in music.           

  • Notate two-voice rhythms.
  • Notate eighth-beat values.

 

UNIT 4:  SIGHTSINGING OF MELODIES

Outcomes:  Student will further develop sightsinging skills using numbers to sightsing major, minor, pentatonic, and twentieth-century melodies. 

  • Sightsing melodies that consist of intervals studied earlier plus d7, A2, A6, d3, d4.
  • Sightsing major, minor, pentatonic and twentieth century melodies.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
