MUS2669 CONCERT BAND II

1 Credit Hour

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the Freshman or Sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

MUS2669 - Concert Band II (1 Hr.)

Concert Band is designed to give our students an enriching and diverse instrumental music experience. This class provides many performance opportunities in a variety of settings. The daily objective of the course is to foster and promote musical growth through the playing of an instrument by the student. As a member of the band program, group effort and cooperation is necessary for a successful experience and program. Being in an ensemble requires a skilled effort in which each student is expected to show technical and musical growth throughout the course.

Course Classification:

Performance / Ensemble

Prerequisites:

Enrollment is open to all students, with instructor approval, who play a percussion or wind instrument.

Controlling Purpose:

Music is an essential part of our social and cultural fabric. Performance-centered classes allow each student to improve their skills and talents as musicians and to develop their levels of expression.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Continue to develop their technique on their chosen instrument
  2. Improve their ability to identify and utilize the basics of music rehearsal and performance
  3. Evaluate their role as a performer in a large ensemble setting
  4. Perform various pieces of music

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content, not including the final examination period.  Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1:   Instrumental Techniques

Outcomes:  Further develop technique on a student’s chosen instrument

  • Identify and produce proper tone
  • Sight-read
  • Identify and use major and minor scales
  • Identify various rhythms
  • Define and use musical terms

 

UNIT 2:   Rehearsal Techniques

Outcomes: Identify the basics of music rehearsal and performance.

Evaluate their role as a performer in a large ensemble.

  • Follow and implement given instructions
  • Perform various expression and tempo markings
  • React musically to various conducting gestures
  • Come to rehearsal prepared
  • Evaluate their role in any given work at any given time
  • Summarize their role and relationship to the ensemble regarding balance and intonation.

UNIT 3:   Performance

Outcomes:  Perform various pieces of music

  • Implement what is learned in rehearsal
  • Accurately perform the demands of each piece of music (i.e., style, expression, rhythm, tempo, etc.)
  • Properly evaluate their performance for strengths and weaknesses
  • Evaluate their role in the college community as a musician and performer

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission, and the Kansas Board of Regents define a credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
