COS5106 COSMETOLOGY II COURSE PROCEDURE


COS5106 COSMETOLOGY II

12 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

COS5106 - Cosmetology II (12 hrs)

Instruction consists of 375 clock hours in hair design analysis, wet design techniques, and thermal design techniques; nail growth structure and diseases, disorders and conditions of the nails including hand and feet services, and artificial and natural nail care; change hair texture chemically to add or adjust or remove curl from the hair. Students will style wigs and hair pieces to meet the client’s needs. Student will also be able to perform all infection control and safety issues associated with all the services listed above.

Prerequisites:

Students must complete COS5105 Cosmetology I with a grade of C or above.

Controlling Purpose:

Cosmetology 2 is being offered so the student will know how to: perform a hair design analysis, wet design techniques and thermal design techniques and long hair design techniques; recognize nail growth structure and diseases, disorders and conditions of the nails including hand and feet services and artificial and natural nail care; change hair texture chemically to add or adjust or remove curl from the hair. Students will style wigs and hair pieces to meet the clients ‘needs. Student will also be able to perform all infection control and safety issues associated with all the services listed above. Students must complete Cosmetology 11, COS 5106 with a grade of C or above to take Cosmetology 111 COS 5107.

UNIT 1: Performing Salon Coordinator Functions

Outcomes: The student will gain familiarity with the front desk operations of a salon.

  • Open salon
  • Answer and make telephone calls
  • Greet clients
  • Schedule appointments for clients
  • Receive payments for services and products
  • Maintain reception area
  • Maintain inventory and sell retail products
  • Explain salon policies to clients
  • Process mail outs
  • Close salon

UNIT 2: Shampooing, Conditioning, Cutting and Styling Hair

Outcomes: The student will gain familiarity with the sculpting and styling of hair.

  • Style hair using thermal equipment and pressing comb
  • Sculpt hair using razor, shear and tapering shear
  • Set hair using pin curlers
  • Set hair using rollers
  • Mold hair using fingers and comb (finger waves)
  • Style hair in keeping with latest trends (high styling)

UNIT 3: Performing Wig Services

Outcomes: The student will gain familiarity with the services for wigs and hairpieces.

  • Shampoo human hair wig or hairpiece
  • Condition human hair wig or hairpiece
  • Clean and condition synthetic wig or hairpiece.
  • Shape wig or hairpiece
  • Set wig or hairpiece
  • Style wig or hairpiece on client’s head

UNIT 4:  Caring for Skin, Hands and Feet (Facials, Manicures, and Pedicures)

Outcomes:  The student will gain familiarity with the services for hand and feet care.

  • Shape and arch eyebrows with tweezers
  • Remove hair using wax depilatory
  • Repair nails
  • Give manicures
  • Apply polish
  • Apply artificial nails
  • Remove artificial nails
  • Give a pedicure

UNIT 5: Permanent Waving and Relaxing Hair

Outcomes: The student will gain familiarity with the services for adding or removing texture in the hair.

  • Consult with client
  • Section pattern appropriate for head and density
  • Select rods and solution for desired perm
  • Test skin for sensitivity to perm/relaxer
  • Perform a preliminary strand test for perm/relaxer
  • Give a permanent wave
  • Give a partial perm
  • Give a body wave
  • Relax permed hair
  • Chemically relax over-curly hair

  21. Hot oil manicure heaters
  22. Assorted permanent wave rods
  23. VCR and DVD machine, computer and monitor, keyboard, projector and screen

Course Timeframe:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
