Catalog Description:
CRJ5482 - Criminal Justice Topics I (3hrs)
This course will combine classroom sessions with out of class life experience to help prepare the criminal justice student for the necessary knowledge and skills expected of today’s criminal justice job applicants. The course will include classroom work as well as evening patrol duties.

Prerequisites:
Student must have taken or be concurrently enrolled in CRJ5411 Introduction to Criminal Justice.
At the start of the course, each student will be required to have a background check completed.
Controlling Purpose:
This course is designed to help student increase the knowledge and skills, through training topics and corresponding ethical issues that are expected of entry-level criminal justice job applicants. The student will apply learning through required police-community services.
Learner Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in basic communications, inspectional processes, self-defense tactics, building entry & searches, traffic control, and the professional ethics required of criminal justice personnel.
Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

UNIT 1: Law Enforcement Communications
Outcome: The student will be able to engage in 2-way police communications.
- Communicate using the law enforcement 10-Signal Codes
- Use law enforcement Alpha code to communicate information clearly.
- Explain the proper usage of handheld communication equipment.
- Functionally use police vehicle communications equipment.
- Explain the basic ethics involved in communications usage.
UNIT 2: Inspectional Processes
Outcome: The student will be able to correctly perform inspectional processes.
- Properly respond to command formation orders.
- Perform formation drills individually and as a unit team.
- Respond to inspection commands individually and as a unit team.
- Reflect the proper personal and uniform appearance of an officer.
- Correct any deficiencies noted within the inspectional processes.
- Explain the correlation between the wearing of the uniform and one’s ethics.
UNIT 3: Baton Usage
Outcome: The student will be proficient in the use of the standard police baton.
- Perform proper response to baton positional commands.
- Apply basic crowd control techniques in response to given commands.
- Protect yourself from aggression using baton tactics demonstrated in class
- Perform basic baton control and removal techniques.
- Explain the ethical issues involved in the use of the baton by law officers.
UNIT 4: Self Defense Tactics
Outcome: The student will be able to defend against an aggressor’s actions.
- Stand in the proper officer-contact positions as demonstrated in class.
- Perform the basic self-defense swing-block techniques.
- Apply swing-block control holds effectively in given situations.
- Effectively switch from a control hold into a takedown position.
- Perform self-defense escape maneuvers from various grabs and holds.
UNIT 5: Securing Buildings
Outcome: The student will be able to perform building securing tactics in a team role.
- Determine the proper approach to unsecured buildings.
- Select and perform the proper entry tactic into a given building situation.
- Perform interior search tactics that provide the best degree of personnel safety.
- Engage in verbal subject control tactics within a given situations.
- Use proper verbal and non-verbal communications during a search scenario.
UNIT 6: Professional Ethics
Outcome: The student will understand the importance of professional ethics.
- Discuss the historical development of law enforcement ethics.
- Explain the importance of positive personal ethics in an officer.
- Define the citizenship responsibilities as a member of a community.
- Identify the ethics expected of the law enforcement profession.
- Critique an officers’ action in given situations provided by the instructor.

Course Timeframe:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
