Catalog Description:
MLS5922 - Military Science and Leadership II (2 hrs.)
This course introduces Cadets to the personal challenges and competencies that are critical for effective leadership. Cadets learn the personal development of life skills such as critical thinking, time management, goal setting, and communication. Cadets learn the basics of the communications process and the importance for leaders to develop the essential skills to effectively communicate in the Army. Cadets will begin learning the basics of squad level tactics that will be reinforced during a weekly lab facilitated by Military Science Cadets and supervised by Cadre.

Controlling Purpose:
Cadets and/or other students continue to develop time management, critical thinking, goal-setting, and communications and begin learning basic tactics.
Learner Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, the student will:
- Identify and describe key aspects of US Military customs and courtesies pertinent to this course
- Identify and describe basic components of squad tactics
- Identify, describe and demonstrate basic movements of squad tactics
- Identify, describe and demonstrate key elements of basic patrolling for squad tactics
- Identify, describe and demonstrate critical thinking characteristics and traits
- Identify and describe learning styles
- Describe and demonstrate time management and goal setting skills
- Describe the communications process
- Demonstrate the use of persuasive communications

UNIT 1: US Military Customs and Courtesies
Outcomes: Upon completion of the unit, students will be able to identify and describe key aspects of US Military Customs and Courtesies pertinent to this course.

UNIT 2: Squad Tactics
Outcomes: Upon completion of the unit, students will be able to identify and describe basic components of squad tactics.
- List the components of a fire team and infantry rifle squad
- Define the roles and responsibilities of each member of a fire team and Infantry
- rifle squad
UNIT 3: Squad Tactics - Basic Movement
Outcomes: Upon completion of the unit, students will be able to identify, describe and demonstrate basic movements of squad tactics.
- Describe the three Individual Movement Techniques (IMT) implemented while
- moving under direct fire
- Apply an understanding of how and when to apply the various team movement
- formations
UNIT 4: Squad Tactics - Basic Patrolling
Outcomes: Upon completion of the unit, students will be able to identify, describe and demonstrate key elements of basic patrolling for squad tactics.
- Identify the two main types of patrols and their different elements
- Identify the five (5) Principles of Patrolling
- Employ basic hand and arm signals
UNIT 5: Critical Thinking Characteristics and Traits
Outcomes: Upon completion of the unit, students will be able to identify, describe and demonstrate critical thinking characteristics and traits.

- Apply the Eight Elements of Thought and Nine Intellectual Standards to a

UNIT 6: Learning Styles
Outcomes: Upon completion of the unit, students will be able to identify and describe learning styles.
- Describe the three types of learning styles
- Explain characteristics associated with each learning style
UNIT 7: Time Management and Goal Setting Skills
Outcomes: Upon completion of the unit, students will be able to identify and demonstrate time management and goal-setting skills.
- Describe the three Army Leader Development Domains
- Identify the key points that support setting effective goals
- Construct a process for effective time management
- Explain the barriers to time management
- Develop a personalized and systematic goal plan
UNIT 8: Communications Process
Outcomes: Upon completion of the unit, students will be able to describe the communications process.
- Explain the steps/components of the communication process
- Identify barriers to effective communication
- Describe ways to improve interpersonal communication
UNIT 9: Persuasive Communications
Outcomes: Upon completion of the unit, students will be able to demonstrate the use of persuasive communications.
- Describe the Rhetorical Triangle and appeals to Ethos, Logos, and Pathos
- Analyze persuasive communication

Course Time Frame:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents, define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
