AMP3371 TURBINE ENGINES & AUXILIARY POWER

3 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the Freshman or Sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

AMP 3371 - Turbine Engines & Auxiliary Power (3 hrs.)

This course introduces the student to the fundamentals of removal and replacement of turbine engines as well as inspection of mounting systems. Procedures used on various types of aircraft and aircraft engines will be discussed as well as safety practices. The course covers safety practices and maintenance practices for proper inspection, troubleshooting, and repair techniques. This course includes information regarding operational theory, inspection, service, and repair of auxiliary power units.

Prerequisites:

Entry is contingent on completion of the FAA General Curriculum: AMG 3350, 3351, 3352, 3353, 3354, & 3355.

Controlling Purpose:

As part of the Aviation Mechanic - Powerplant program as outlined by the FAA Part 147 document, a minimum of 750 hours of General Curriculum training is required.  This structure of this course is designed to provide a minimum of 72 hours of Turbine Engines and Auxiliary Power Unit curriculum as outlined in Appendix D to Part 147 - Powerplant Curriculum Subjects.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

  • Overhaul turbine engine
  • Inspect, check, service and repair turbine engines and turbine engine installations
  • Install, troubleshoot and remove turbine engines
  • Inspect, check, service and troubleshoot turbine driven auxiliary power units

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period.  Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1: Engine Overhaul

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to successfully demonstrate knowledge of Overhaul turbine engine

  • Identify the different areas and components of a turbojet engine.
  • Identify different types of turbine engine compressors.
  • Identify pressure, temperature, and velocity changes in a turbojet engine.
  • Identify various components of jet engines.

UNIT 2: Turbine Engine Maintenance

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to inspect, check, service and repair turbine engines and turbine engine installations.

  • Inspect the burner section of a jet turbine engine.
  • Removal and installation of a turbine engine.
  • Starting a turbine engine
  • Install a starter on a turbine engine.

UNIT 3: Turbine Engine Troubleshooting

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to successfully install, troubleshoot and remove turbine engines.

  • Removal and installation of a turbine engine.
  • Starting a turbine engine
  • Inspect and operate a turbojet engine

UNIT 4: Auxiliary Power Units

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to successfully demonstrate knowledge of the inspection, service and troubleshooting of turbine-driven auxiliary power units.

  • Describe the operational theory of auxiliary power units
  • Explain function, operation, and start procedure for auxiliary power units
  • Explain the auxiliary power unit inspection process
  • Explain the methods used to service and repair auxiliary power units

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
