ALH5238 - Phlebotomy Field Experience 1 hour(s) Elective Type: Technical Elective Special Funding Identifier: KS Excel in CTE Initiative Schedule Note: Spring only Description This field-based course is designed to provide the necessary clinical experiences to prepare the student for certification as a phlebotomist. As a member of the health care delivery team, the phlebotomist generally works in a clinical laboratory under the supervision of the appropriate technologist. The phlebotomist is primarily responsible for collecting blood specimens from patients for the purpose of laboratory analysis. The course will emphasize safety, specimen collection (venipuncture and capillary puncture) and specimen processing. Students will demonstrate the basic skills required to collect a blood specimen. The student will demonstrate knowledge of venipuncture, collection equipment, specimen collection, and the ability to collect blood specimens by venipuncture and skin puncture. The clinical rotation consists of 120 documented hours with minimum performance of 100 combined venipuncture and skin punctures and orientation in a full service laboratory.
Prerequisite(s): Student must have completed a High School Diploma or equivalent as well as the ALH5237 - Principles of Phlebotomy course. At the start of the course, each student will be required to have a background check completed.
