AGR1221 SMALL RUMINANT PRODUCTION

3 Credit Hours

Catalog Description:

AGR1221 - Small Ruminant Production (3 hrs.)

This course approaches the education of students from a practical, real world approach to the Sheep and Goat industry. The students will be introduced to the concepts of nutrition, reproduction, EPD use, selection, health, handling, and management of Sheep and Goats through all phases of their respective industries.

Controlling Purpose:

The purpose of this course is to give the agricultural student a better understanding of the sheep and goat industry, and its importance to agriculture, the global economy, and nutritional needs to the world’s population.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Describe sheep and goat breeds, external body parts and basic internal anatomy.
  2. Demonstrate basic evaluation techniques for all phases of production and understanding animal behavior.
  3. Interpret and explain reproduction techniques, expected progeny difference (EPD’s), and practices used in the sheep and goat industry.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of nutritional concepts and the animal’s health in all phases of the industry.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1: Breeds and Anatomy

Outcomes: Students will Describe sheep and goat breeds, external body parts, and basic internal anatomy.

  • Identify and explain each of the sheep and goat breeds used in both industries.
  • Illustrate and interpret the function of each external body parts.
  • Identify and explain internal body parts and their functions.

UNIT 2: Evaluation of Sheep and Goats

Outcomes: Student will demonstrate basic evaluation techniques for all phases of production and an understanding of animal behavior.

  • Determine grades for live sheep and goat animals for slaughter.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of form to function.
  • Determine which female or male will fit the requirements of the operation needs, when replacement is necessary.
  • Evaluate market animals and calculate the following data; dressing %, average daily gain, and etc.

UNIT 3: Reproduction Methods

Outcomes: The student will be able to interpret and explain reproduction techniques, EPD’s, and practices used in the sheep and goat industry.

  • Explain sheep and goat reproduction methods.
  • Describe the use of artificial insemination techniques.
  • Calculate and Demonstrate knowledge of EPD’s used in the respective Industry.

UNIT 4: Sheep and Goat Nutrition

Outcomes: Student should demonstrate knowledge of nutritional concepts and the animal’s health in all phases of the industry.

  • Identify Feed ingredients and their use.
  • Demonstrate the ability to calculate rations for each phase of the two species industry.
  • Identify and explain the nutrients.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
