ART2139 FOUNDATION DESIGN COLOR

ART2139 - Foundation Design Color (3 hr.)
A continuation of ART2130 emphasizing the study of color including vocabulary, pigment mixing, color organization and a review of the psychological effects of color as used in visual communication. Instructional process includes lecture, critique and supervised studio practice.

Controlling Purpose:
This course is designed for students to learn the study of color including vocabulary, pigment mixing, color organization and a review of the psychological effects of color as used in visual communication.
Learner Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to do the following:
- Apply critical thinking skills to solve visual problems
- Demonstrate knowledge of the color wheel and how it pertains to color theory
- Demonstrate knowledge of the psychological effects of color as used in visual communication
- Demonstrate knowledge of pigment mixing
Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

UNIT 1: Color Theory
Outcomes: Upon completion of the unit, the students will have the ability to successfully use color vocabulary, mix pigment, organize color and understand the psychological effects of color as used in visual communication.
- Identify, explain and apply the principles of visual communication.
- Demonstrate and utilize proper color vocabulary.
- Identify the 3 pigment primary colors.
- Identify secondary colors.
- Identify tertiary colors.
- Define and demonstrate color harmony.
- Identify and apply the formulas for color harmony.
- Define and describe analogous colors.
- Identify complementary colors.
- Define and describe monochromatic color schemes.
- Identify and/or describe Triad colors.
- Define and demonstrate use of shades.
- Define and demonstrate use of tints.
- Mix and apply paint.
- Describe and awareness and utilization of color context.
- Explain the concept of relativity of color.
- Describe psychological effects of color as used in visual communication.
- Identify and/or associate colors with “mood” or various emotional responses.
- Create designs that are likely to achieve desired emotional effects or responses.
- Demonstrate precise craftsmanship in projects and exercises.

Gouache paint, watercolor brushes, Bristol board (vellum finish), pocket color wheel

Course Time Frame:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
