ART2150 ELEMENTARY ART METHODS

3 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the Freshman or Sophomore year.

Catalog Description:
ART2150 - Elementary Art Methods (3 hrs.)

This course is for those who plan to go into elementary education. It is a lecture course with a hands-on approach designed so anyone desiring to be a teacher (K-8) can design, implement, and evaluate arts experiences that are developmentally appropriate, meaningful and challenging for all students, and which lead to positive learning outcomes and develop positive attitudes toward artistic explorations and expressions. This course is designed for education majors but is open to all students who wish to learn more about working with art and young children.

Prerequisites:

It is recommended students complete EDU6211 Introduction to Teaching prior to enrolling in this course, or take EDU6211 Introduction to Teaching concurrently, or receive permission from the instructor.

Controlling Purpose:

The purpose of this course is to help the student increase knowledge concerning methods used in integrating visual art into the elementary and middle school classroom.

Core Outcomes:

The learning outcomes and competencies detailed in this course meet, or exceed the learning outcomes and competencies specified by the Kansas Core Outcomes Project for this course, as sanctioned by the Kansas Board of Regents.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

  • Demonstrate creative media exploration in the use of art materials, tools, processes, and technology by designing and implementing curriculum appropriate to elementary and middle level students. 
  • Recognize and design learning experiences that are developmentally meaningful, appropriate, and challenging for all students and which lead to positive learning outcomes that develop positive dispositions toward artistic explorations and expression. 
  • Research, develop, and teach an elementary/middle level art-based cross curricular lesson plan. 
  • Demonstrate the ability to objectively assess art learning, both formally and informally. 
  • Recognize and describe the impact of global citizenship (art history, culture, diversity, and technology) on the fine arts and their integration across the elementary and middle level curriculum. 
  • Promote, preserve, represent, and advocate for aesthetic inquiry in elementary and middle schools as vital academic elements in creative study, problem-solving, and product development. 

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period.  Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1: Global Citizenship

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will recognize and describe the impact of global citizenship (art history, culture, diversity, and technology) on the fine arts and their integration across the elementary and middle level curriculum. 

  • Explain art as a universal visual language.
  • Describe various categories of visual and cultural arts
  • Identify influences upon visual arts and how the visual arts impact society
  • Interpret perceptions of others through experiences and creative thinking

UNIT 2:  Artistic Explorations & Expression

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will recognize and design learning experiences that are developmentally meaningful, appropriate, and challenging for all students and which lead to positive learning outcomes that develop positive dispositions toward artistic explorations and expression. 

  • Identify learning experiences which promote creative thought, exploration, or expression
  • Design experiences where elementary and middle level students can use the visual arts to express feelings, thoughts, and core content knowledge in creative forms
  • Select and use subject matter, symbols, and ideas to communicate meaning

UNIT 3: Unit and Lesson Plan Development

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will research, develop, and teach an elementary or middle level art-based cross-curricular lesson plan.

  • Identify the needs of students
  • Make connections between core content and visual art
  • Design appropriate modifications and accommodations to suite student learning or physical needs by assessing various tools, materials, and media processes

UNIT 4: Assessment & Evaluation

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will Demonstrate the ability to objectively assess art learning, both formally and informally

  • Evaluate various assessment tools for appropriate use in analyzing works of art
  • Establish lessons which teach students how to reflect on an artist’s use of elements and principles of design
  • Design evaluation process which allow students to reflect on their creative works
  • Design lessons which teach students how to provide effect critique of the works of others

UNIT 5: Media Exploration

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will demonstrate creative media exploration in the use of art materials, tools, processes, and technology by designing and implementing curriculum appropriate to elementary and middle level students. 

  • Apply the formal elements and principles of design
  • Explore and reflect on the use of various media, tools, processes, and technology for instruction in the elementary and middle level classroom
  • Plan and evaluate art lessons through an interdisciplinary approach
  • Develop a proposal for an art space and appropriate materials to promote expression and creative thought in the elementary and middle level classroom

UNIT 6: Aesthetic Exploration and Development

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will promote, preserve, represent, and advocate for aesthetic inquiry in elementary schools as vital academic elements in creative study, problem-solving, and product development. 

  • Evaluate ways to display student art work which are appropriate to setting, media type, audience, etc.
  • Develop opportunities for community and school to view student products which demonstrates the contribution art makes in overall learning and development
  • Analyze research regarding visual arts and the impact on core content learning and develop a statement of support and justification for visual arts in schools

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
