ART2160 PROBLEMS IN ART

2 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in Sophomore and post high school vocational.

Catalog Description:

ART2160 - Problems in Art (2 hrs.)

Individual instruction in area or media of student’s choosing. This course should be used for additional study in an area after all available courses in the area have been completed.

Course Classification:

Independent Study

Prerequisites:

Instructor approval.

Controlling Purpose:

This course is designed for those who have successfully completed prerequisites and have chosen a definite area to explore in depth.  It is also designed to enable one to re-enforce one’s ability in any given area of art.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will have chosen an area of particular interest in the area of art:  usually an extension of an area covered briefly before, and have polished skills into a more professional manner in this area, exhibiting both ideas and execution in the chosen media in a portfolio of works.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other content as time allows.

UNIT 1:   Assessment of Basic Skills and Knowledge

Outcomes:  The student will evaluate current abilities and knowledge in the area to be explored.

  • Conduct a self-evaluation of skills and knowledge currently possessed in the media chosen for further exploration.

UNIT 2:  Technique, Media, and Ideas to be Explored

Outcomes:   The student will research and develop a plan for the design and execution of works in the chosen media.

  • Research ideas and methods utilized in the creation of works of art in the chosen media.
  • Create plans for the completion of a series of works of art which enhance both the knowledge and skill of the artist in the chosen media.

UNIT 3:  Portfolio Development

Outcomes:  The student will document their process and product in a professional manner.

  • Document their creative process through the use of written journals, drawings, and/or photographs.
  • Create a portfolio of works utilizing the chosen media.
  • Critically evaluate the execution of their ideas in the chosen media through written or verbal critique.

Projects Required:

Project number varies with the complexity and size given the chosen media.

Textbook:

Contact Bookstore for current textbook.

Materials/Equipment Required:

Will vary with the media chosen for further exploration.

Attendance Policy:

Students should adhere to the attendance policy outlined by the instructor in the course syllabus.

Grading Policy:

The grading policy will be outlined by the instructor in the course syllabus.

10 students

Course Timeframe:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
