Catalog Description:

ART2177 - Art Exploration: Learning to Throw on the Potter’s Wheel (1 hr.)

This course is designed to present basic techniques and allow the student to gain experiences in making ceramic pottery forms using the potter’s wheel. The course is intended for non-art majors and community members at large; however, art majors who have not used the potter’s wheel or wish additional experience may benefit from the course.

Controlling Purpose:

This course is designed to present techniques and allow the student to gain experiences in making ceramic pottery forms using the potter’s wheel. The course is intended for non-art majors and community members at large, however art majors who have not used the potter’s wheel or wish additional experience may benefit from the course.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of the potter’s wheel as a tool used in the creation of basic ceramic forms.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period.  Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1: Elements of Ceramic Design

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will demonstrate utilization of the formal elements of art and their application to the design and construction of wheel thrown pottery.

  • Utilize the formal elements of design including line, shape, space, color, and texture as they apply to the ceramic form.
  • Utilize the principles of design including repetition, balance, rhythm, unity, form, dominance/contrast as they apply to the ceramic form.

UNIT 2: Exploration of the Media

Outcomes:  Upon completion of this unit, the students will demonstrate an understanding of the materials and techniques used to create pottery using the potter’s wheel and to evaluate success based upon peer critique.

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the tools and materials used in the creation of pottery forms on the potter’s wheel. This will include wedging, centering, and pulling as techniques in order to create cylinder, bowl, and plate forms made of clay with the use of a potter’s wheel.
  • Explore several possible solutions to a design problem utilizing the media.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the history of the media as it pertains the techniques presented.
  • Participate in a peer critique of the working produced.

Projects Required:

Students will be required to throw basic forms derived from the techniques used to create cylinders, bowls, and plates.  Lids and handles may be introduced if time permits or student interest and aptitude are evident.

None required

Materials/Equipment Required:

Students will be required to purchase a minimum of 25 lbs of cone 6 clay which may be obtained from the instructor, the bookstore, or other ceramic supply source.  A basic ceramic tool kit is optional, but suggested.  All other basic tools will be provided.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
