CGA2030 INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL IMAGING

Catalog Description:
CGA2030 - Introduction to Digital Imaging (3 hrs.)
This course is designed to extend participant’s knowledge of digital imaging techniques by adding skills of integration with computer painting and drawing programs. Computers and flatbed scanners will be used with concentration on the use of Adobe Photoshop and scanning software.

Controlling Purpose:
This course is designed as an introduction in the use of Adobe Photoshop. Through hands-on experience with the program/computer, the student will learn the principles of digital image manipulation using current tools of technology.
Learner Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to open, create, scan, and print digital images using Adobe Photoshop software and flatbed scanning software.

UNIT 1 - Introduction to ADOBE PHOTOSHOP
Outcomes: Upon completion of the unit, the students will be able to
- Set preferences to personalize use of Photoshop software.
- Utilize and save the various pallets available in Photoshop.
- Utilize, select, and create layers.
- Paint using the pencil, paintbrush, and airbrush tools.
- Utilize the pointer, eraser, and smudge tools.
- Create and use foreground and background colors.
- Sample a color using the eyedropper tool.
- Manipulate foreground and background colors.
- Create, manipulate, and save various types of selections.
- Utilize the crop, rubber stamp, fill and gradient tools.
- Copy, cut and paste images from one file into another.
- Fill an image with a pattern.
- Utilize the type tool to add text to an image.
- Create and manipulate paths using the pen tool.
- Create and manipulate selection masks.
- Adding and working with channels.
- Rotate a selection using the various rotate commands.
- Add a stroke and fill to a path or subpath.
- Scale an image.
- Define and adjust hue and saturation of an image.
- Change the canvas size of the file.
- Create a selection from a path.
- Manipulate the opacity of a selected layer.
- Feather a selection.
- Adjust the brightness and contrast of an image.
- Flip an image horizontally or vertically.
- Change the size of an image: dimensions, resolution, etc.
- Understand various color models and their uses.
- Make color corrections using the Variations, tonal range, Levels, Curves, Color Balance and Desaturation commands.
- Display images in Bitmap, Grayscale, Duotone, Indexed Color, RGB Color, CMYK Color, Lab Color and Multichannel modes.
- Understand compression and how it is used when saving files.
- Understand the differences between various file types: BMP, EPS, GIF, JPEG, PICT, RAW, TIFF, and others.
- Import various file types into Photoshop.
- Save images as various file types.
- Utilize Photoshop files in other applications.
- Create and manipulate layer masks.
UNIT 2 - Scanning Digital Images
Outcomes: Upon completion of the unit, the students will be able to
- Launch scanner software and operate a scanner.
- Understand image resolution.
- Utilize a scan preview to set resolution and size.
- Scan an image as a line art, halftone, grayscale, or color image.
- Scan an image at the proper resolution and size as required.
- Save a scanned image as the proper file type as needed.
UNIT 3 - Printing and Color Separations
Outcomes: Upon completion of the unit, the students will be able to
Understand the difference between “Bit” and grayscale and color environments.
- Understand and apply the use of various color theories and color models.
- Apply color with the use of color palettes, libraries, and templates.
- Understand how various file types affect the printing process.
- Create color separations for digital images.
- Prepare documents and images for the commercial printing industry.

Simulations from text as assigned.

Materials/Equipment Required:
Adobe Photoshop CS5 and a USB storage device.

Course Timeframe:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission, and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching, and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
