This course is the continued study of elemental techniques in pianoforte performance to attain proficiency and understanding for personal musical development in preparation for further studies in music.

Prerequisites:
MUS2640 Class Piano I or previous piano study. Music majors only or permission from the instructor.
Controlling Purpose:
This course is intended to provide a method of guiding the music major in learning the skills of playing the piano. The stimulus of groups learning will provide an incentive for accomplishments. The course will emphasize functional skills, keyboard techniques and musical styles.
Learner Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate basic skills necessary to function and perform at the keyboard.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:
The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other material as time allows.
UNIT 1: Major Scales
Outcomes: Student will demonstrate by performance, knowledge of all one octave major scales.
- Play all major scales using standard fingerings, one octave hands separately.
- Play major melodies extending to an octave.
- Play and transpose major melodies in a five-finger hand position.
- Play the chord progressions (cadences) for each major key (I-IV-I-V-I).
UNIT 2: Minor Scales (Natural, Harmonic & Melodic)
Outcomes: Student will demonstrate by performance, knowledge of all three forms of minors.
- Play all three forms of minor scales in tetrachord fingering.
- Sight-read and transpose melodies within the minor scale.
- Play the chord progressions (cadences) for each minor key (I-IV-I-V-I).
- Harmonize minor melodies with the correct chords from the cadences learned.
UNIT 3: Harmonic Minor Scales
Outcomes: Student will demonstrate by performance, knowledge of the harmonic minor scales played hands separately.
- Play harmonic minor scales using standard fingering, hands separately.
- Additional sight-reading and transposition of melodies within the minor scale.
- Play the chord progressions (cadences) for each minor key (I-IV-I-V-I).
UNIT 4: Review of All Major and Harmonic Minor Scales
Outcomes: Students will demonstrate by performance hands separately, knowledge of the above scales in all keys.
- Play minor and major cadences beginning on any key.
- Perform additional solo repertoire that utilizes octave patterns.
- Harmonize melodies with root position chords in the given keys.
- Sight-read and transpose melodies in any 5-finger pattern.
- Play by ear familiar melodies in major and minor.
UNIT 5: Harmonization & Accompaniment
Outcomes: Student will demonstrate by performance, knowledge of harmonizing a melody and demonstrate basic accompanying skills.
- Harmonize a melody in major or minor, with root position (tonic, subdominant, dominant) chords in the LH.
- Learn to utilize the VI, II and V/V chords in the major key.
- Read and play lead-sheet chord symbols.
- Create a simple two-hand accompaniment based on chord progressions given.
- Play an independent melody in an ensemble.
- Play by ear a familiar melody and harmonize in keyboard style (chords in RH, single note LH).
UNIT 6: Modal Scales
Outcomes: Student will demonstrate by performance, knowledge of harmonizing a melody and demonstrate basic accompanying skills.
- Play and transpose each mode (Ionian, Dorian, Phyrgian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian) in tetrachord fingering.
- Memorize and perform a modal 20th century piece of at least 16 measures in length.
- Explore modal improvisations, using modal harmony or an ostinato.
Projects Required:
Memorization and performance of two solo piano pieces.
Lead sheet harmonization and accompaniment.
Others as assigned.

Course Time Frame:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
