BUS1350 - BUSINESS LAW

3 Credit Hours

 

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either the Freshman or Sophomore year.

BUS1350 - Business Law (3 hrs.)

A basic introductory law course covering the legal and social environment within which business operates, including the structure, processes, and procedures of the U.S. legal system.

Controlling Purpose:

The purpose of this course is to develop an understanding of the legal framework of business that will be meaningful to students in their lives as citizens, business owners, and employees. This course will assist students with understanding legal terms, legal difficulties, and when to seek the advice of an attorney. It will assist students with making decisions within the framework of the law.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Understand how the law was created
  2. Know how laws change and are updated
  3. Identify business contracts
  4. Recognize relevant ethical considerations

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period.  Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1: The Legal System

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to

  • Identify the sources of U.S. Law
  • Understand the U.S. court system
  • Know the methods of dispute resolution
  • Recognize the importance of ethical considerations

UNIT 2:  Contracts

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to

  • Identify important contract terms
  • Recognize the importance of various contract elements

UNIT 3: Sales and Leases

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to

  • Identify sales and lease contract terms
  • Understand the concepts of performance and breach of contract

UNIT 4: Negotiable Instruments

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to

  • Know the essentials of negotiability
  • Understand the differences between transfer and liability

UNIT 5: Agency and Employment

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to

  • Describe the elements of agency relationships
  • Recognize the legal aspects of immigration and labor law
  • Understand employment discrimination

UNIT 6: Business Organizations

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to

  • Recognize the duties of business entities
  • Compare and contract the types of various business entities
  • Understand the potential liability of business entities

UNIT 7: Credit and Risk

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to

  • Recognize the importance of security interests and business remedies
  • Understand the key elements of insurance, mortgages, and bankruptcy

UNIT 8: Property

Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit, the students will be able to

  • Know the principles of property law
  • Understand the differences between personal property, real property, and intellectual property

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college.  A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time.  The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
