CHC5732 CHILD CARE PRACTICUM I

3 Credit Hours

Student Level:

This course is open to students on the college level in either Freshman or Sophomore year.

Catalog Description:

CHC5732 - Child Care Practicum I (3 hrs)

Students will gain hands-on experience in actually working with children. This class will provide 150 clock hours in the care of young children. 

Course Classification:

Internship/Cooperative Education/Practicum

Prerequisites:

Six (6) credit hours of Early Childhood courses, two years of experience in a licensed facility, or instructor approval.

At the start of the course, each student will be required to have a background check completed.

Controlling Purpose:

This course is designed to help the student recognize and apply the Kansas Statutes for Licensing while being involved in the early childhood profession.  This course will provide hands-on experience in early childhood settings.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to use concepts of observation and evaluation.  Demonstrate knowledge of the Kansas Statutes and Regulations for Licensing Preschool and child care centers.  Create Lesson Plans based on developmentally appropriate curriculum for toddler and preschool children.

UNIT 1: Observation and Assessment

Outcomes: Upon Completion of this unit, students will be able to successfully…

  • Prepare observational guidelines pertaining to age of children in which field work is being done.
  • Utilize observation as teaching tools.
  • Use knowledge gained from observations to plan and implement age appropriate curriculum.

UNIT 2: Kansas Statutes and Regulations

Outcomes: Upon Completion of this unit, students will be able to successfully…

  • Maintain a class room that follows all of the Kansas Statutes and regulations.
  • Identify location of specified statute or regulation.
  • Use knowledge of the Kansas Statutes in field work classroom.

UNIT 3: Early Childhood Curriculum

Outcomes: Upon Completion of this unit, students will be able to successfully

  • Prepare lesson plans for Infant/Toddler/Preschool age children.
  • Explain the relationship between developmentally appropriate practices and successful teaching.
  • Explain how to use positive discipline strategies.
  • Implement age appropriate lesson plans.

Projects Required:

Students will complete 150 contact hours working with children in a state licensed Child Care facility, complete a packet of course work provided by the instructor, and schedule two observations from the instructor at the facility in which their field work is completed.

Course Time Frame:

The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission, and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching, and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
