COS5105 COSMETOLOGY I

This course is open to students on the college level in either the freshman or the sophomore year. A high school dual enrollment program may also be offered.
Catalog Description:
COS5105 - Cosmetology I (12 hrs)
Instruction consists of 375 clock hours in professional development and effective communications, human relations, microbiology, infection control procedures, and guidelines as well as first aid procedures for the industry. Sanitary rules and regulations governing the cosmetology profession are taught. Students will also perform services in client consultation using design decisions considerations, selecting the correct hairstyle to fit the client using design principles and elements, scalp and hair analysis, shampooing, conditioning, scalp treatments, and hair cutting by length arrangements and design principles. Long hair design techniques will also be included in the class.

Prerequisites:
An applicant must have attained the age of 17 years and be a graduate of an accredited high school, or have passed the GED (General Education Development) test. Additionally, student must meet or exceed minimum reading score of 255 according to the ACCUPLACER Next Gen Reading test or ACT Reading score of 18 or higher; Completion of College Composition I with a “C” or higher or having already earned an Associate degree or higher required will waive the reading test.
Controlling Purpose:
Cosmetology I is being offered so the student will be introduced to the profession by discussing the professional development and effective communications as well as human relations required. The student will also be skilled in identifying microbiology, infection control procedures and guidelines as well as first aid procedures for the industry. The student will understand and implement the Sanitary Rules and Regulations governing the Cosmetology profession. The student will also perform services in, client consultation using design decisions considerations, selecting the correct hairstyle to fit the client using design principles and elements, scalp and hair analysis, shampooing, conditioning, scalp treatments and hair cutting by length arrangements and design principles. Students must complete Cosmetology I, COS 5105 with a grade of C or above to take Cosmetology II COS 5106.
Learner Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate proper cleaning and sterilization procedures to protect themselves and the public.
- Demonstrate proper techniques for cleansing, conditioning and sculpting of hair.
- Demonstrate appropriate supervision and/or application of sanitation and first aid procedures for salons.
Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:
The following defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period. Instructors may add other content as time allows.
UNIT 1: Cleaning and Sterilizing Implements, Equipment, and Facilities
Outcomes: The student will gain familiarity with the sanitary rules and regulations and procedures to protect themselves and the public.
- Disinfect combs, brushes, and implements in accordance with laws governing disinfecting.
- Disinfect electrical equipment in accordance with laws governing disinfecting.
- Disinfect curlers, clips, perm rods, and perm trays in accordance with laws governing disinfecting.
- Disinfect work area in accordance with laws governing disinfecting.
- Launder towels, smocks, and capes in accordance with laws governing disinfecting.
- Clean break room, stockroom, reception, individual station, and shampoo areas in accordance with laws governing disinfecting.
UNIT 2: Shampooing, Conditioning, Cutting and Styling Hair
Outcomes: The student will gain familiarity with the cleansing, conditioning and sculpting of hair.
- Drape client, analyze hair and scalp, and shampoo hair.
- Condition hair (with all types rinse)
- Design (cut) hair with all implements
- Set hair using jet set rollers
- Style hair by sculpting (hand or fingers)
- Trim beard, mustache, and sideburns
- Identify the facial shapes of clients and recommend an appropriate hairstyle, and home maintenance products.
UNIT 3: Managing the Salon
Outcomes: The student will gain familiarity with the sanitary and safety rules for salons.
- Supervise cleaning and sanitation procedures
- Give first aid for minor cuts
- Give first aid for chemical reactions to scalp, skin and eyes
- Maintain and check working fire extinguisher, sanitation and safety equipment

Course Timeframe:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
