ALH5242 INTERNATIONAL CLASSIFICATION OF DISEASE (ICD) CODING

ALH5242 - International Classification of Disease (ICD) Coding (3 hrs)
This course is designed to present ICD concepts into a format that follows guidelines for ‘service coding’ & ‘diagnosis coding’ in outpatient settings of clinics and hospitals. This is the first set of courses in Medical Coding.

Controlling Purpose:
This course is designed to help the student increase their knowledge regarding advanced medical billing and coding and is first set of classes in the series of medical coding classes that should be taken concurrently to fully understand the concepts of coding in the medical profession.
Learner Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to thoroughly understand the concepts of ‘service codes’, (CPT & HCPCS) and ‘diagnosis codes’ (ICD-CM) in the outpatient settings of clinics and hospitals for both the physician and the facility services. In addition, students will review and evaluate the Documentation Guidelines for Evaluation Management Services.

UNIT 1: KBOR Aligned Competencies
Outcomes: The student will demonstrate an exemplary understanding of the ICD Coding.
- Differentiate the structure and use of the volumes in the ICD
- Apply correct coding conventions in the ICD
- Assign diagnosis codes according to current guidelines
- Sequence diagnosis codes according to current guidelines
- Consult reference materials to facilitate code assignment
- Apply the ICD Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting
- Identify discrepancies between coded data and supporting documentation
- Follow the standards of ethical coding
- Link CPT code to the appropriate ICD diagnosis code
- Assign procedure codes according to current guidelines
- Sequence procedure codes according to current guidelines
- Apply the ICD Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting
- Identify discrepancies between coded data and supporting documentation
UNIT 2: Review of the ICD-CM and CPT
Outcomes: The student will demonstrate an exemplary understanding of the ICD-CM and CPT coding manuals.
- Defend the use of the CPT & ICD-CM Manuals.
- Integrate the ability to properly code using the CPT & ICD-CM guidelines.
- Perform ICD-CM coding conventions when assigning cases.
- Evaluate the ICD-CM Tabular Index, Alphabetic Index and
- Procedures Index.
- Explain the ICD-CM and CPT manuals.
UNIT 3: ICD-CM, HCPCS and CPT Coding Application
Outcomes: The student will demonstrate the ability to utilize the ICD-CM, HCPCS and CPT coding manuals in contextually appropriate situations.
- Demonstrate an understanding of CPT, ICD-CM & HCPCS coding in the overall application to a medical claim.
- Apply knowledge of Body System Coding for diagnosis coding.
- Apply knowledge of ICD-CM Tabular Listing, Alphabetic Index and Procedures Index.
- Understand and apply outpatient coding guidelines.
- Understand and apply knowledge of basic Healthcare Reimbursement including Medicare, Medicaid & Federal and State Workers’ Compensation Programs
- Understand and apply HIPPA regulations.

Course Time Frame:
The U.S. Department of Education, Higher Learning Commission and the Kansas Board of Regents define credit hour and have specific regulations that the college must follow when developing, teaching and assessing the educational aspects of the college. A credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out-of-class student work for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester hour of credit or an equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time. The number of semester hours of credit allowed for each distance education or blended hybrid courses shall be assigned by the college based on the amount of time needed to achieve the same course outcomes in a purely face-to-face format.
