Course Classification:

Prerequisites:

Attendance of a Science Workshop. Teaching License.

Controlling Purpose:

This course will offer Educators an opportunity to expand on experience gained from a Science Workshop to cultivate their pedagogical skills in the area of Science while working to fulfill continuing education requirements for License Renewal.

Learner Outcomes:

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

  • Engage in the Reflective Process when implementing workshop materials and lessons within the classroom.
  • Create extension lesson plans which expand on the topics from the workshop and address additional state or national Science Standards.
  • Design and implement lesson plans which demonstrate an interdisciplinary approach.
  • Write modifications and accommodations for a multi-tiered approach for various learning abilities using measurable objectives.
  • Produce lessons which generate awareness of career pathways or practices.

Unit Outcomes for Criterion Based Evaluation:

The following outline defines the minimum core content not including the final examination period.  Instructors may add other material as time allows.

UNIT 1:  Implementation of Workshop Materials

Outcomes:  The Educator will engage in the reflective process when implementing workshop materials and lessons through an online journal.

  • Design lesson plans for implementation of workshop materials (if none were provided) indicating Science objective(s) to be covered.
  • Describe the full implementation of workshop materials indicating specific Science objective(s) to be covered in an initial journal writing.
  • Use an Instructional Evaluation Rubric to analyze a personal teaching video to determine the overall success of lesson implementation.
  • Develop an assessment which measures students’ understanding of the Science objective(s) covered.
  • Justify modifications needed to instruction or materials to ensure student success through a follow-up reflective journal writing.

UNIT 2:  Extension Science Lesson Plan Development

Outcomes:  The Educator will create and implement extension lesson plans which will expand on the topics from the workshop and address additional state or national standards.

  • Create a minimum of three lesson plans which expand on one or more Science Objectives to advance students’ knowledge and skill in one or more Science categories (i.e. Physical, Life, Earth/Space)
  • Describe the full implementation of the extension lesson plans in an initial journal writing.
  • Use an Instructional Evaluation Rubric to analyze personal teaching videos to determine the overall success of implementation.
  • Develop assessments for each lesson which measures students’ understanding of the Science objective(s) covered.
  • Justify modifications needed to instruction or materials to ensure student success through a follow-up reflective journal writing based on Instructional Rubric results or student assessment results.

UNIT 3:  Integration of Modifications and Accommodations

Outcomes:  The Educator will integrate modification or accommodations of instruction or materials into lesson plans development and implementation to fulfill a multi-tiered approach for various learning abilities.

  • Describe the diverse population being served within the classroom and potential challenges in meeting the varied learning needs.
  • Determine specific modifications or accommodations needed by specific students when implementing one or more of the previously designed lesson plans.
  • Integrate the recommended modifications or accommodations into lesson plans prior to implementation.
  • Use an Instructional Evaluation Rubric to analyze personal teaching videos to determine the overall success of implementation.
  • Develop modified assessment options for each lesson which measures students’ understanding of the Science objective(s) covered.
  • Justify modifications needed to instruction or materials to ensure student success through a follow-up reflective journal writing based on Instructional Rubric results or student assessment results.

UNIT 4:  Interdisciplinary Approach

Outcome:  The Educator will design a 3-5 lesson Unit which integrates objectives from various disciplines to make cross-curricular connections.

  • Create lesson plans from 3-5 content areas outside of Science which include one or more objectives from those different content areas.
  • Describe the full implementation of the interdisciplinary lesson plans in an initial journal writing.
  • Use an Instructional Evaluation Rubric to analyze personal teaching videos to determine the overall success of implementation.
  • Develop a Unit assessment(s) which measures students’ understanding of the various objective(s) covered.
  • Justify modifications needed to instruction or materials to ensure student success through a follow-up reflective journal writing based on Instructional Rubric results or student assessment results.

UNIT 5:  Career Connections

Outcomes:  The Educator will design at least one lesson plan which connects Science to various career pathways.

  • Develop a survey which provides data on student career interests and student understanding of potential career fields which implements Science.
  • Create and implement a lesson plan for students to investigate career fields that implement Science on a regular basis.
  • Use an Instructional Evaluation Rubric to analyze personal teaching videos to determine the overall success of implementation.
  • Develop an assessment(s) which measures students’ understanding of the objective(s) covered.
